WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest sophomore Dina Nosenko has been selected to compete at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Nosenko qualified for the championships in the women's mile run thanks to her performance last weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational. She ran a 4:41.10, breaking Jill Snyder's school record which had stood for 10 years. That time has Nosenko ranked 15th coming into the championships.
"The hardest thing about the NCAA Championships is getting there," said Director of Track & Field Annie Bennett. "For someone making their first trip, the hardest part is over. Usually if you can run what you did to get there [NCAA Championships], you're going to be on the awards stand at the end of the meet. For Dina, she just ran her best time so she knows what it takes and she is really confident right now."
This will be Nosenko's first trip to the NCAA Championships. She ran well in the prelims of the 1,500m run at last year's outdoor NCAA Regionals and will undoubtedly take that experience into this meet.
"Dina has had a taste of the big meet so she knows what to expect," said Bennett. "She a kid who has been through a lot and I don't think she'll let the moment get to her. It will be just another race. She has prepared well and she's ready to go."
After winning the mile run at the NY Armory Duals on Feb. 13, Nosenko turned in two very good performances at the ACC Championships just two weeks later. She finished fifth in the mile with a then indoor-best time of 4:49.03 and also took seventh in the 3,000m run.
Nosenko will look to become the first Demon Deacon women to earn All-American status indoors since Michelle Sikes finished third in the 5,000m run in 2007. The only other women's miler to have earned All-American honors is Jill Snyder who took home the award in both 2000 and 2001.
The first preliminary heat of the women's mile run will start at 6:10 pm eastern time on Friday evening. The top-10 times will then advance to the finals which will start at 7:25 pm eastern time on Saturday.
ESPN360.com will stream portions of the championships live beginning at 9 pm eastern time, Friday, March 12, and 7:10 p.m. eastern time on Saturday. To access the live stream, visit www.ESPN360.com. NCAA.com will stream supplemental coverage as available when ESPN360.com is not live. Additionally, ESPN2 will air a 90-minute show at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, March 17.
