Deacons Grab Five Victories at High Point Vertklasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The women's track and field team claimed four victories by its runners and two more by assistant coach Joanna Schultz in Sunday's Vertklasse Meeting at High Point University's Dick Vert Stadium.
Freshman Mytoia Gathings led the way for the Deacons in the 100m dash, sprinting to a victory with a time of 12.09, just over a tenth of a second from breaking the school record. Gathings also powered the 4x100m relay team to a victory in that event as well; the quartet posted a time of 47.31, once again just short of the school record.
Caitlin Hartnett, another freshman, grabbed another victory for Wake Forest as its lone participant in the 800m run. She shattered her old personal best in the event en route to the first-place finish with a time of 2:16.89.
The Deacons will return to action beginning Thursday at the ACC Outdoor Championships to be held at Wallace-Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University in Durham. The meet will continue through Saturday, April 23.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from the Vertklasse Meeting.
100m Dash
Mytoia Gathings powered the trio of Deacons in the event by claiming the win with a time of 12.09. Sophomores Myesha Barr and Anneve Waithe performed at a high level as well, placing third and sixth overall with times of 12.45 and 12.90, respectively.
100m Hurdles
The heptathlon trio of Erika Martin, Gwen Ricco and Julie McCauley competed together in the event. Martin (15.76) and Ricco (16.03) finished sixth and seventh, while McCauley placed 11th with a time of 16.66.
200m Dash
Volunteer assistant coach Joanna Schultz, competing as an unattached runner for the second consecutive week, won the event with a time of 24.51. Myesha Barr enjoyed a solid third-place finish in 25.59, and Julie McCauley's time of 26.93 gave her tenth place overall.
400m Dash
Freshman Jordyn Glaser (58.33) and senior Kim Vos (58.36) turned in nearly identical times to take second and third place in the event. Vos's mark represents a new personal best for her in the 400m run.
400m Hurdles
Joanna Schultz earned her second victory in as many weeks while competing as an unattached runner in the 400m hurdles, finishing with a time of 59.60. Freshman Allison Johnson turned in another great performance of 1:02.46 to finish second overall.
800m Run
Freshman Caitlin Hartnett represented the Deacs well, claiming the victory and a new personal best time of 2:16.89 in the 800m run.
1,500m Run
Juniors Laura Rapp and Katy Swain ran alongside freshman Melanie Powers in the 1,500m run. Rapp and Powers finished sixth and seventh overall with times of 4:48.65 and 4:49.00, and Swain placed 16th after crossing the line in 5:04.43.
4x100m Relay
The 4x100m relay team of Mytoia Gathings, Myesha Barr, Anneve Waithe and Erin Brooks sprinted to yet another victory on the day for the Deacons with a combined time of 47.31.
Hammer Throw
Junior Carmen Green posted a personal-best throw of 154-11 (47.22m) and finished second overall in the event.
Shot Put
Junior Sarah Brobeck continued her string of solid performances by finished third after a toss of 42-5.25 (12.93m).
High Jump
Junior Samantha Howell, a jumps specialist, placed fourth overall with a mark of 5-1.25 (1.56m). Erika Martin also competed in the event and earned a seventh-place finish, jumping 4-9.5 (1.46m).
Long Jump
Sophomore Gwen Ricco had another victory on the day for the Deacs in the long jump with a mark of 18-9.25 (5.72m). Julie McCauley also notched a top-5 finish in the event with a distance of 17-2.75 (5.25m).
Pole Vault
Sophomore Madison Kocher placed fifth overall, her best finish of the season, with a vault of 11-2.25 (3.41m).
Javelin Throw
Sarah Brobeck and Erika Martin's throws of 115-6 (35.22m) and 113-7 (34.62m) gave them finishes of fifth and sixth. Gwen Ricco placed 13th in the event after a throw of 86-5 (26.36m).
Discus Throw
Carmen Green notched the final victory of the day for Wake Forest, setting a new personal best with a throw of 147-9 (45.04m). Sarah Brobeck also had a fifth-place finish with a mark of 134-9 (41.09m).
