Being part of Wake Hockey means more than just playing field hockey against other universities, it means that you become part of a family rich in tradition on and off the field. As part of the senior class comes a long list of responsibilities to the team for not only the student-athletes but the parents of the student-athletes, as well.
One of the traditions is carried by one of the senior's fathers. At every game, the father that is selected has to wear the Wake Forest bow tie. The bow tie represents the pride and support shown and felt by the families and friends that support the team. And on the rare occasion the father is unable to wear the bow tie, a replacement is found for the game and the bow tie is still worn. Below is a picture of my dad, Rod, at one of our games in the bow tie.

The traditions help by the parents does not end there. The wife of the man chosen to wear the bow tie coordinates the tailgates that are held after games by the parents. The wife organizes the games that will be followed by tailgates and who will bring different goods to the tailgate. The tailgate is an important part of Wake Hockey because it allows Wake Hockey to truly become a family. At the tailgates different family and friends interact and learn more about one another. It is one of my favorite things we do to include our friends and family in Wake Hockey.
This year we are lucky enough to have Peter and Diana Adams leading the team with these two traditions. The Adam's have helped continue the tradition and have made us feel the love they have for our team. This past weekend, Diana Adams' hard work was seen in our first tailgate of the season. Below are a few pictures from the tailgate.
