LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ashlee Krulock score the game-winning goal for the Flames with just over five minutes remaining in regulation as the No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team was upset by Liberty 2-1 Friday afternoon at Liberty Hockey Field.
The Demon Deacons fall to 4-3 overall with the loss and the Flames improve to 3-4 overall with the victory.
Leading the way for the Deacs was Anna Kozniuk, who scored Wake Forest's only goal of the match. She was assisted by Jess Newak and Christine Conroe.
After both teams went into the half deadlocked at 0-0, the Demon Deacons got on the board first two minutes into the second half. At the 37:00 mark, Kozniuk scored off a penalty corner taken by Conroe, which was then laid off by Newak to set up Kozniuk for her fifth goal of the season.
The home side tied the match at the 45:25 mark. Sarah Gipe turned in a rebound out of the air to get the Flames on the scoresheet. For Gipe, it was her third goal of the season.
Both teams battled away for the next 20 minutes, but Liberty would finally make the breakthrough when it mattered most. Erin Dombach and Krulock found themselves on a two-on-one situation against Wake Forest goalkeeper Valerie Dahmen. Dombach passed the ball to Krulock, who flicked it past Dahmen into the back of the cage.
The Demon Deacons would not be able to muster out another chance as the Flames pulled off the upset. It was the first time that Wake Forest has lost to an unranked opponent since a 2-1 loss to Louisville on October 14, 2012.
The Deacs return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Richmond, Va. to take on the Spiders at 1 p.m. The team returns home on Tuesday, September 23, hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Kenter Stadium at 6 p.m.
