LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior goalkeeper Valerie Dahmen made a save on a penalty stroke with 15 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 2-1 win for Wake Forest at No. 8 Louisville on Friday.
Dahmen made 11 saves in the win but none were more impressive than the save she made on Elisa Garcia's penalty stroke in the final seconds of the game.
No. 7 Wake Forest improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in ACC play with the road win. Louisville dropped to 6-3 overall and 0-3 in league games.
The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on a goal by Krysta Wangerin. Emily Conroe passed the ball in front of the cage and Wangerin was there to sweep it in to the goal. Louisville answered just five minutes later and tied the game 1-1 on Stephanie Byrne's sixth goal of the season.
Wake Forest scored the go ahead goal in the 63rd minute on a penalty corner. Conroe earned her second assist of the game on a pass in to Megan Anderson who set up the shot for Jule Grashoff. Grashoff converted the shot for her sixth goal of the season.
Louisville pulled their keeper with 2:47 to play in the game. The extra pressure helped the Cardinals earn a penalty stroke with 15 seconds remaining in the match. Garcia sent her shot low and to the right but Dahmen was there for the save to preserve the win for Wake Forest.
Wake Forest continues its road trip on Sunday with a 12 p.m. game at Miami (Ohio). The Deacs are 3-0 against the Red Hawks but have never played in Oxford, Ohio.
