WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams totaled five event wins and added 10 runner-up finishes at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge meet at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons were scheduled to compete at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational, but that meet was canceled due to weather.
Alexander Giacco won the men's mile, Sydney White took the women's pole vault and Charlie Ionata and Alva Hicks won the men's and women's weight throw events, respectively. In addition, a quartet of Deacons won the men's distance medley relay.
After winning the 3,000m at the Wake Forest Invitational, Giacco won his second of the event of the season by running a 4:17.77 mile. He edged out teammate Mitchell Dyer, who was making his collegiate debut, by just under three seconds.
Hicks, who broke the women's weight throw record in the first two meets of her Wake Forest career, accomplished the feat for a third-straight time with a toss of 18.64m. Fellow Deacs Casidy Callahan and Andrea Vahoua rounded out the top three in the event.
The Deacons took the top two spots in the men's weight throw, as well. Kyle Johnson was outdistanced only by Ionata's winning throw of 19.10m (62-8).
With a pole vault mark of 3.95m, White helped the Demon Deacons sweep the top four. Following the All-American senior in order were teammates Kathleen Adair, Tesia Kempski and Madison Bragg.
Both Wake Forest track and field teams are slated to return to action on Jan. 29 and 30 at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. After that, the Demon Deacons will leave Winston-Salem for the first time this season when they head to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
