Deacs Cap Regular Season With Two Meets

BLACKSBURG, Va./WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams conclude their indoor regular seasons this weekend by sending competitors to a pair of meets. The Demon Deacons will be represented at the Virginia Tech Challenge at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. and the UCS Invitational in at the JDL Fast Track Winston-Salem.
The Virginia Tech Challenge is slated to take place Friday and Saturday, while the UCS Invitational will start and end on Saturday.
Heading to Blacksburg will be men's pole vaulters Luke Annichiarico and Michael Cyphers and women's pole vaulters Sydney White, Kathleen Adair and Tesia Kempski. Alexandria Florent will accompany them to compete in the high jump.
Fifteen Deacon men will take part in seven events and 14 Deacon women are set to compete in eight events at the UCS Invitational.
Wake Forest is coming off a solid showing at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. last week. The Deacon teams combined for 10 event titles in 32 total events scored.
Simon Holden (mile), Sebastian Fischbach (3,000m), Craig Corti (5,000m), Charlie Ionata (weight throw), John Maurins (shot put) and the 4x400m relay team won events for the men. For the women, Sydney White (pole vault), Kendal Knous (800m), Samantha Jones (3,000m) and the distance medley relay team won all placed first.
On the indoor season, 18 Demon Deacon individuals and five relay teams have posted 32 titles at seven meets. Ionata's win at Marshall last week was his fourth, the most of any Deac this season.
Additionally, Alva Hicks and Sydney White have set school records. Hicks' 18.64m weight throw at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge on Jan. 24 and White's 4.20m pole vault at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Feb. 6 both set new program-high marks.
The Deacs will resume action at next week's ACC Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass.
