BLACKSBURG, Va./WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams concluded their indoor regular seasons on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Challenge at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. and the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Highlighting the day for the Demon Deacons were weight throw titles from Alva Hicks and Charlie Ionata in Winston-Salem.
Hicks broke the school record for the fourth time this season, launching a toss of 18.99m to win her third event of the season. The Deacon record in the event entering the year was 17.55m by Lindsay Neuberger in 2007, but Hicks eclipsed that number with marks of 18.13m, 18.49m, 18.64m and now, 18.99m.
As she did in the shot put, Andrea Vahoua placed third in the women's weight throw and teammate Casidy Callahan rounded out the top four.
Ionata won his team-leading fifth event title of the indoor season on Saturday with a personal record weight throw of 19.96m. Fellow Deac Kyle Johnson came in third with a toss of 17.85m.
Also finishing in the top five for the Deacs at the UCS Invitational were John Maurins, Max Adams, Frank Ahearn, Andrew Fea and both the men's and women's distance medley relay teams. Maurins, Adams and Ahearn placed second through fourth, respectively, in the men's shot put and Fea took fourth in the men's 600m.
In Blacksburg, Sydney White led a trio of Wake Forest women's pole vaulters with a fifth-place, 4.11m jump. Alexandria Florent had a third-place showing in the women's high jump, clearing 1.68m.
The Demon Deacons will resume action at next week's ACC Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass.
