Deacons Cap ACC Championships

BOSTON -- Freshman Robert Heppenstall became Wake Forest's first-ever men's 800m ACC champion to highlight the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams' final day of competition at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Crossing, Mass. on Saturday.
Heppenstall broke the Demon Deacons' school record and the ACC Championships record with a 1:47.35 time in the race. The Hamilton, Ontario native won the preliminaries in the event on Friday before taking first in the finals with his record-breaking performance on Saturday.
The previous record in the 800m at the conference meet was set by David Krummenacker of Georgia Tech when he crossed the finish line in 1:47.77 in 1998. Mike Guegan set the Deacons' previous record with a time of 1:48.76 in 1991.
Simon Holden also earned All-ACC honors in the 800m with a fifth-place time of 1:48.77, just a hundredth of a second short of Guegan's old school record.
Also garnering all-conference honors was John Maurins, who had a 17.93m throw in the shot put to place fifth. The Second Team All-ACC honor was the second of the sophomore's career.
The Deacon men came in 11th at the meet, while the women came in 14th.
Kathryn Lazarchick had the best finish among the Wake Forest women, placing seventh in the women's mile with a 4:43.99 time. She improved upon her eighth-place showing in the preliminaries on Friday. Samantha Jones placed 12th in the 3,000m after an all-conference performance in the 5,000m on Friday.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will take place in Birmingham, Ala. on March 11-12. The Deacons will open their outdoor season on March 18-19 by hosting the Wake Forest Open.
