WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium on Saturday. The meet was the teams' first of the outdoor season. Sydney White, Jessie Merckle and Kathryn Lazarchick each posted a first-place finish for the Demon Deacons on the day.
On the weekend, the Deacs tallied five titles and had 18 finishes inside the top five after having nine top-five showings on Saturday.
White, an outdoor All-American who won at three meets in the 2015-16 indoor season, cleared 4.07m in the women's pole vault to come out on top. She was followed by teammates Tesia Kempski, Kathleen Adair and Madison Bragg, who placed third, fifth and sixth, respectively.
In her senior season debut, Merckle won the women's javelin by a comfortable margin, using a 52.02 toss to claim first place. Her throw was more than 20 feet further than Christine Rickert of High Point, who came in second.
Lazarchick led a group of four top-10 Deacons in the 800m. She edged runner-up teammate Kendal Knous by 0.78 seconds for the victory. Caitlin Krol and Lara-Ann Schwede placed eighth and 10th, respectively.
Hunter Roberts and Casidy Callahan also came in the top three for the Wake Forest women at the meet, which had a series of delays due to inclement weather. Roberts came in second in the 400m hurdles with a 1:02.88 time, while Callahan's 44.57m discus throw earned her a third-place finish.
For the men, Max Adams had the highest finish, leading a quarter of Deacs in the discus with a fourth-place 49.67m throw. Andrew Fea and John Archie were both in the top 10 in the 800m, while Bobby Jacowleff took seventh place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.17 seconds.
The Wake Forest Open was the Demon Deacons' lone home meet of the season. They will pick up competition next week at the Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday.
