Demon Deacons to be Represented at Two Meets

The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will send student-athletes to two meets this week. The Florida Relays will be held James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville, Fla. from Thursday through Saturday, while the High Point VertKlasse Meeting will take place Friday and Saturday High Point's Vert Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Robert Heppenstall, Simon Holden, Sebastian Fischbach, Michael Cyphers, Sydney White, Kathleen Adair and Alexandria Florent will head to Florida.
Heppenstall will make his Wake Forest outdoor debut in the 800m after an All-American indoor campaign. Teammate and fellow indoor All-ACC honoree Simon Holden will join him in the race. Pole vaulter White and high jumper Florent are coming off an event titles at the season-opening Wake Forest Open two weeks ago.
Florent earned ACC Co-Field Athlete of the Week honors for her personal-best 1.78m leap. That mark tied the best height nationally for that week.
The Demon Deacons will have 46 student-athletes entered in the High Point VertKlasse Meeting, including 25 on the women's side and 21 on the men's side.
Headlining the Deacs at that meet will be Wake Forest Open event winners Charlie Ionata and Jessie Merckle.
Ionata won the men's hammer throw with a 65.15m toss and led the Deacs with five event wins in the indoor season, all in the weight throw. The Barrington, R.I. native also had the top finish of all Deacon competitors last week at the Raleigh Relays with a third-place showing in the hammer.
Merckle, who entered the season with ACC champion and All-American accolades under her belt, won the women's javelin at the Wake Forest Open with a throw of 52.02m, 20 feet further than the event's second-place finisher.
After this weekend, the Demon Deacons will resume outdoor action at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
