
Top-Ranked North Carolina Tops No. 16 Wake Forest

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 1 North Carolina (12-0, 5-0 ACC) defeated Wake Forest field hockey (6-6, 1-3 ACC), 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium.
The Tar Heels jumped out to 4-0 lead before the Deacons were able to get on the board. Elisha Evans scored the lone goal for Wake in the 46th minute off a rebound from a penalty corner with the assist from Jule Grashoff.
Wake Forest faced just a 1-0 deficit at the half, but the Tar Heels put up three goals right out of the break to quickly take command of the game with a 4-0 lead. Evans answered back just one minute later with her third goal of the season to cut the Deacons deficit to three, but the Tar Heels capped the game with another goal in the 68th minute.
North Carolina took 27 shots and had 16 shots on target. The Deacons posted eight shots and had six on goal. Grashoff paced the Deacon offense with four shots, three of which were on target, while Evans notched two shots on goal.
Defensively, Isla Bint made the start in the net and recorded two saves before senior Cat O'Connor stepped in for the final 25 minutes of the match and picked up seven saves. The five goals allowed by the Deacons is the most in a game this season.
Wake Forest returns home on Sunday, Oct. 7, to host Appalachian State in non-conference action. Match time is set for 1 p.m., at Kentner Stadium.
