CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Six-seeded and 20th-ranked Wake Forest field hockey (10-8) earned a 3-2 victory over the three-seed and 12th-ranked Louisville Cardinals on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship.
"It's not about one player, but Jule (Grashoff) was crushing it today and posed a major threat," head coach Jen Averill said. "We had such a positive aura about us going into the game. Anytime you are a coach in that position, you just love it. We need to tweak a few things, but they owned it and they deserve that victory."
Louisville (13-6) took an early 1-0 lead off a penalty corner in the third minute of play and scored again in the 29th minute, but the Deacons rallied to find answers to each of the Cardinals' goals.
Wake Forest evened the game at 1-1 in the first period as freshman Grace Sambrook scored a timely first goal of the season. Grashoff took a shot that was saved, but she was able to regroup to find Sambrook for the equalizer.
The Cards regained the lead late in the first period with a shot over Wake keeper Isla Bint's head. The Deacs called for a review as it appeared the ball went out of bounds, but the video was inconclusive, as the goal stood and Louisville took a 2-1 advantage.
With time expiring in the first period, the Deacons were awarded their fifth corner of the half. Kelsey Gill inserted the ball as Megan Anderson made the stop to set up Grashoff for the missile into the corner of the net, tying the score at 2-2 heading into the locker room.
Both defense battled in the second period, but the Deacs prevailed in the 56th minute as Gill found Emily Adamson at the top of the circle who launched one past McFerran for the 3-2 lead, forcing Louisville to call a timeout. The Wake Forest defense held the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the quarter final victory.
The Deacs controlled possession in the match, outshooting their opponent 14-8 and placing nine shots on target. Bint made three saves in the net to keep the Cardinals a bay as she earned the win to move to 9-4 on the year. Grashoff paced the offense with seven shots and five on goal, while Adamson recorded four shots, three of which were on target.
Wake Forest will take on second-seeded Duke in the semifinals of the ACC Championship tomorrow at 2:30 at Karen Shelton Stadium. Ticket to the games can be purchased at the gate.
