No. 1 North Carolina Defeats No. 20 Wake Forest in the ACC Championship
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey (11-9) advanced to the finals of the ACC Championship for the first time since 2014, but fell to the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium.
Senior Jule Grashoff continued to impress at the tournament scoring both of the Deacon's goals, but the Wake Forest defense struggled to contain the offensive production of the Tar Heels who tallied 21 shots and 13 shots on goal. The teams combined for six goals in the opening half and nine goals overall.
UNC (19-0) struck early and often, scoring four goals in the first 35 minutes of play. ACC Freshman and Offensive Player of the Year Erin Matson put the Tar Heels on the board with a goal in the opening minute of play following a penalty corner. UNC extended its lead 2-0 as Eva Van't hoog batted the ball in over Wake Forest goalkeeper Isla Bint's head just three minutes later.
Wake Forest cut North Carolina's lead to one after Jule Grashoff netted her 21st goal of the season and first of the day on a penalty corner from NCAA assist leader Megan Anderson and junior Kelsey Gill in the 12th minute.
The Tar Heels answered back with two more goals in the first period. Megan Duvernois batted the ball into the corner of the net from the right side as North Carolina regained a two goal lead. Four minutes later the Tar Heels struck again with a rebound following an initial save from Bint.
Wake Forest answered back as Anderson found Grashoff in the middle of the circle for the Deacons' second goal of the day following a penalty corner late in the first half. North Carolina held on to a 4-2 lead at halftime.
The Tar Heels controlled the momentum out of the break, scoring three unanswered goals. Matson scored her second of the game along the left baseline seven minutes into the second period. Cassie Sumfest extended North Carolina's lead to 6-2, firing a shot from the top of the circle after the ball was passed back from a Wake Forest defender. The Tar Heels notched their final shot of the game in the 54th minute on a penalty stroke that got past Cat O'Connor who entered the game for Bint.
Grashoff led the Deacons with three shots on goal, while Anderson recorded two assists in the contest. In the net, Bint made six saves for Wake Forest.
The Deacons will await the NCAA Selection Show in hopes at a bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Selection Show will air on NCAA.com on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 10 p.m.
