Anne van Hoof scored two early goals to left the Deacons over the Tribe.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Behind two early goals from sophomore Anne van Hoof, Wake Forest field hockey (3-4) defeated William and Mary (3-3), 4-1 in the home opener at Kentner Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
"We were excited to be home," head coach Jen Averill said. "The energy and efficiency to control the tempo and possession in the first half was good. We started getting fatigued in the second half and made some foolish decisions on the ball, but for the most part I was really pleased to see us come out to a quick start."
The Deacons took control of the match early as van Hoof scored twice within the first five minutes- both goals coming off penalty corners. Just under three minutes into the game, the Tribe fouled Wake in the circle, giving the Deacons their first corner opportunity. Alexis Grippo inserted the ball, while Megan Anderson set up van Hoof perfectly allowing Wake Forest to take an early 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, the Deacs set up the same play off the penalty corner as van Hoof scored her second goal of the game and fourth of the season, forcing William and Mary to make a goalkeeper change early. This was the first multi-goal game in van Hoof's career.
Wake took a 2-0 advantage to the locker room. The defense held the Tribe shotless in the first half and only allowed three shots the entire game, two of which came off penalty corners.
After the break, Anderson added to the Deacons' lead with a goal right down the middle with the assist from senior Jule Grashoff, Anderson's second of the season.
In the 48th-minute, Elisha Evans recorded her first goal of the year, fed to the left side from freshman Laia Vancells, the first assist of her career.
William and Mary got on the board at the 49-minute mark on a penalty corner with the goal by Cata Days and the assists from Cara Menges and Christie van de Kamp. The Tribe was awarded another penalty corner just minutes later, but Wake Forest keeper Isla Bint (3-1) made the save to limit the damage.
Wake Forest finished the game with 14 shots, seven of which were on goal and six corners. Bint made one stop in the net.
The Deacons return to Kentner on Friday, Sept. 21 to host No. 7 Louisville in a ACC matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
