WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Senior Jule Grashoff scored three of the Deacons' four goals to lead Wake Forest (4-4, 1-1 ACC) over the seventh-ranked Louisville Cardinals (6-3, 1-2) 4-2 on Friday night at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest controlled the tempo for the entire match, outshooting its opponent 15-4 and putting nine shots on goal, while holding the Cards to just two.
"It was something (the tempo) that we had practiced and rehearsed all week. Hats off to them because they heard it and executed it. I am so incredibly proud of the mindset coming into tonight's game, the fight coming back from a deficit, twice and also just some individuals calls. On that last corner, Jule said, 'I can score this.' You have to love kids with that character that are willing to take the heat if they don't score, but also have the guts and the fortitude to take it. It was an absolute team effort."
Grashoff led the Deacons throughout the match as she fired off eight shots, six of which were on target. Louisville's standout goal keeper Ayeisha McFerren was able to contain three of Grashoff's attempts, but the forward was too much for the Card defense to handle as she recorded her first hat trick of the season and the second of her career.
The Cardinals took the lead early in the match scoring off a rebound of a penalty corner at the eight-minute mark. The Deacons answered back as Grashoff found the back of the net for her first goal of the night as Wake Forest was awarded a penalty corner. Alexis Grippo inbounded the ball, while Megan Anderson set Grashoff up for missile down the middle.
Ten minutes into the second frame, Louisville regained the lead as Whena Munn scored on the deflection that went over Wake keeper Isla Bint's head. The Deacs rallied again as another penalty opportunity led to the Wake Forest equalizer as Grashoff scored her second goal of the night assisted by Veerle Bos and Anderson.
Wake Forest controlled the remainder of the game as the defense contained the Cards in the circle and the offense continued to thrive. Anderson gave the Deacons the first lead of the night as she got passed McFerren on a rebound after another Wake penalty corner, giving the Deacs a 3-2 advantage in the 62nd minute.
Grashoff shut the door on the upset with the final goal for the Deacons in the 68th minute off another corner with the assists from Grippo and Anderson. Anderson finished the game with a season-high five points with one goal and three assists. Grashoff collected six points off three goals and recorded her first hat trick since Oct. 28, 2016 when the Deacons defeated Appalachian State 9-1.
The Deacons return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 23, as they travel to Richmond to take on the Spiders at 12 p.m.
