Facioni Dazzles on Day 2 for Wake Forest
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field programs wrapped up the Clemson Bob Pollock Invitational on Saturday. The Deacs collected three victories and 18 top-10 finishes through the two-day event.
"Our team accomplished some important tasks today that helps us prepare for the ACC championships in a month," said head coach John Hayes. "While many of the distance men raced out of their primary events, our distance medley relay earned a time that should qualify them to the fast heat. Zach (Facioni) opened with a very controlled 2:59 for the 1200 leg. Additionally, he followed that up with a strong 3k time that ranks third in Wake Forest history and that should put him in the important fast heat at ACC."
DAY ONE | The Demon Deacons got going early on Friday with Brionne Pyles and Kaitlyn Kirby taking part in the women's pentathlon. Kirby finished sixth overall (3285 points) with top-10 finishes in each leg of the pentathlon. Pyles also cracked into the top-10 with a ninth-place finish (3013 points).
On the track, Hannah Brookover (7th – 4:50.41), Johanna Schulz (8th – 4:50.58), Amy Harding-Delooze (9th – 4:51.06), Georgia Evans (13th – 4:56.31) and Elise Wright (17th – 5:02.08) impressed in the women's mile to tie Florida State for the most top-20 finishes in the event. Michael Moerk, Daniel Viegra, Jack Tiernan, Craig Corti, Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos and Andrew Magiera all finished in the top-25 in the men's mile. Cydney Delley earned a top-five finish (5th) in the women's 400m. To close out day one, the men's DMR team (Kaleb Bryant, Zach Facioni, Dakota Greenwalt Robert Heppenstall) ran away with the win in the 4000m distance medley relay.
In the field, Janese Lynch (shot put) and Tesia Kempski (pole vault) both earned top-10 finishes for the Deacs.
DAY TWO | Wake Forest closed out their third meet of the season with 2 event victories, 7 heat winners and nine top-10 finishes on the final day of the Bob Pollock Invitational.
Greenwalt kept the momentum going from day one with a solid run in the men's 600m. Heppenstall, 3x All-American, followed that up with a victory in the 800m, while Archie Wallis won his heat in the 800m, finishing fifth overall. Freshman Lily Harding-Delooze earned a top-10 finish (8th) in the women's 800m to pace the Deacs.
2018 ACC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, Zach Facioni, made his case for earning similar honors in T&F. The Sydney, Australia native cruised to victory (8:08.98) in the men's 3000m by nearly six seconds. His 3k time ranks third all-time and is the best finishing time since teammate Sebastian Fischbach (8:17.97) in 2016.
Freshman Ethan Roach won his heat in the men's 200m at 22.21 seconds and Junior Kaleb Bryant finished second in the same heat at 22.96 second. On the women's side, Sam Halvorsen (6th) and Mimi Smith (7th) gave the Deacs two top-10 finishes in the women's 3000m. In the race, Halvorsen set a new 10-second personal best.
In the field, Freshman Kane Aldrich set a career-best mark of 4.85 (15'11") to take third in the men's pole vault. Fellow newcomer Andrew White set a career-best mark of 16.21m in the men's weighted throw event. For the women, Alexandria Florent took sixth in the high jump at 1.69m (5'6.5").
"Can't say enough about Kane Aldrich," Hayes claimed. "As just a freshman, he qualified for ACC championships in the pole vault. Next week is huge as Heppenstall will attempt a sub four-minute mile at the Camel City Classic which would earn him a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships."
Up next, the Deacs will be back in Winston-Salem for the Camel City Classic (Feb. 1-2). Competition takes place at the JDL Fast Track.
