WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Head coach Jennifer Averill picked up her 400th career victory as No. 20 Wake Forest downed Michigan State 3-1 in Kentner Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Demon Deacons move to 6-7 on the season and 4-2 at home, while Michigan State falls to 6-7.
"It was a surprise," Averill said. "I am just super proud of the way the team handled the comeback after Friday. We did some great things on Friday night, but today I thought we put together a really strong performance. It is all about the moment and each game. I am super proud of all the athletes that have led to this pinnacle point."
Isla Bint made five saves in the game including several crucial stops to keep Michigan State from getting into the game.
Wake Forest took a season-high 27 shots, as they enjoyed a substantial 27-10 shot difference against the Spartans. Sophomore Laia Vancells led the squad with 6 shots while the Deacs shared the ball with nine different players with at least one shot attempt.
Laia Vancells started the scoring as she scored her third goal of the year from an assist from Meike Lanckohr late in the first quarter.
Twenty-two minutes later, Freshman Maggie Dickman scored her first career goal off an assist from Abby Carpenter. Dickman shortly recorded her first career assist as she found Kelsey Gill for the final goal.
Wake Forest will remain in Kentner Stadium for another ACC matchup against top-ranked North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
