Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No. 1-ranked North Carolina field hockey team capitalized off a quick start to defeat No. 20 Wake Forest 3-1 Friday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
The Tar Heels improve to 13-0 on the year and 5-0 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons fall to 6-8 and 0-4 in the league.
North Carolina enjoyed the duo of Erin Matson and Marissa Creatore, as Matson found Creatore for two first half goals. After a scoreless third period, Carolina struck again with a goal from Matson assisted by Yenti Leemans.
Junior Anne van Hoof answered back with a goal for the Deacons just five minutes before the final horn sounded. Van Hoof's third goal of the season came after a penalty corner, while the assists came from freshman Meike Lanckohr and senior Kelsey Gill. Van Hoof had a great look earlier in the game, but her attempt narrowly missed, bouncing off the post of the cage.
"We know that Erin Matson is a great player," van Hoof said. "She is one of the best players in the country right now. She is very speedy and our game plan tonight was to just cut her off. We put a big focus on her and I think all of our back line did well keeping her in front of us. Wake vs. North Carolina is always a battle. It's always a gritty game."
North Carolina had more opportunities than Wake Forest on the evening, totaling sixteen shots and two penalty corners compared to just five shots and four penalty corners for the Deacs.
Senior goalkeeper Isla Bint recorded seven saves in the contest.
The Demon Deacons will hit the road against Davidson on Sunday Oct. 20th at 1 p.m.
