SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 4-2 to No. 15 Syracuse on Friday night at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Wake Forest (7-9, 0-5 ACC) struggled offensively to start the game, not getting a shot off in the first half. Syracuse took advantage of the slow start for the Deacons, putting up two early goals. Charlotte de Vries scored her 15th goal of the season, right at the corner on the left side of the cage at the 10-minute mark.
Syracuse (10-5, 2-3 ACC) extended its lead 2-0 following a goal from Sarah Luby at 26:23.
The Deacons came out firing in the third quarter scoring two goals in just as many minutes. Freshman Meike Lanckhor delivered her first goal of her career at the 31-minute mark with an assist from junior Alexis Grippo. Just two minutes later, the pair connected again, this time with Grippo finding the back of the net off a pass from Lanckohr to even the game 2-2.
Syracuse followed suit, scoring its third goal of the game at 37:18 as Carolin Hoffman fed SJ Quigley for the score. Another two minutes later, the fourth goal of the quarter was scored as Syracuse extended its lead 4-2 following an unassisted goal from Laura Graziosi.
The action slowed in the final quarter as neither team managed to find the back of the net. Each side was awarded two penalty corners, but neither team could convert. Wake played a man down for 15-minutes of the match, with three yellow cards in the second half.
Syracuse controlled a 13-4 shot advantage, but three of Wake's four shots were on goal. The Deacons' first two shots of the contest were scores.
Wake Forest returns to Kentner Stadium to close out the regular season with three consecutive home games. The Deacons will host Appalachian State on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. Admission to all Wake Forest field hockey games is free.
