WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Anne van Hoof scored two goals and added an assist to power No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey (8-9) over Appalachian State (9-7) 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Deacs played a terrific overall game as they enjoyed the 17-4 shot advantage, while also holding the 11-1 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Isla Bint kept the Mountaineers at bay with 4 saves.
"Our overall awareness and ball movement, when we did move the ball quickly, was efficient," head coach Jen Averill said. "When you have the structure and mobility like that, you can hurt opposing teams. That has been lacking so it is great to see a lot of people play a lot of different positions today. The overall structure to our outletting was a huge step forward today."
Van Hoof opened the scoring with a goal in the twelfth minute off a penalty corner from Meike Lanckohr and Alexis Grippo and sending it into the back of the cage to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead. Grippo added to the tally with a penalty stroke, just 30 seconds into the third period.
The Deacons added two more goals in a three minute span starting in the 44th minute. Van Hoof added her seventh goal of the season on an unassisted blast off a corner rebound, while Laia Vancells scored her fifth goal thanks to a pass from van Hoof deep inside the circle.
Wake was not quite done, though. Abby Carpenter added her first goal of the season just under two minutes before the end of the game on a strong shot from the center of the circle after driving through Appalachian State's defense to give the Deacs the deciding 5-0 lead.
Up next, Wake will continue its three-match home stand with a pair of games at Kentner Stadium to close out the regular season. The Deacons will host the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday Nov. 1, at 6 p.m., before closing the regular season against Richmond on Sunday.
