Wake Forest battled back from deficits of 5-0 and 9-6 to force extras before falling, 10-9, in 12 innings.

CONWAY, S.C. -- Wake Forest battled back from deficits of 5-0 and 9-6 before eventually falling to No. 16 Coastal Carolina in 12 innings, 10-9, at Springs Brooks Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Demon Deacons (8-5) bullpen limited the Chanticleers (11-2) to just one run over the final eight innings, but Parker Chavers hit a walk-off single in the 12th to seal the victory for Coastal.

Bobby Hearn tossed 2.2 shutout innings in relief, striking out four while allowing one hit and no walks. Antonio Menendez followed that with 3.0 shutout frames and five strikeouts as he pitched the eighth through the 10th.

Patrick Frick led the Wake Forest offense with a 3-for-6 effort and a home run, as well as four RBIs.

Coastal Carolina hit three doubles in a five-run second inning, but the Deacs answered right back with six runs in the third, capped by a two-run single from Frick and RBI singles from Shane Muntz and Logan Harvey.

The Chanticleers retook the lead with four runs in the fourth, including a two-run homer by Chavers.

Harvey hit an RBI groundout to cut the margin to 9-7 in the fifth before Frick roped a two-run blast to tie the game at 9-9.

Chavers finished the game 5-for-6 with a homer and three RBIs, including the walk-off hit in the bottom of the 12th. Zach Biermann was 5-for-7 with two doubles and three RBIs, as well.

Wake Forest scored all nine of its runs against three CCU middle relievers, but the Deacs were unable to get to the back end of the Coastal bullpen. Trevor Damron tossed 3.0 shutout frames with three strikeouts, while Dylan Gentry followed with 2.0 hitless innings to earn the win.

The Deacs and Chanticleers square off again on Wednesday morning with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m.
