Wake Forest won its third ACC title in the last four years with a 4-2 victory over Virginia
CARY, N.C. – The fourth-ranked and top-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team captured its second consecutive ACC title, defeating No. 5 Virginia, 4-2, in the final of the ACC Tennis Championship.
It is the third title in program history for the Demon Deacons (29-3), with all three titles coming in the last four years. Wake Forest also won the 2016 and 2018 tournaments, and all three championships have come at the Cary Tennis Park.
In a tightly contested match throughout, it was a neck-and-neck doubles point that eventually went to Virginia (21-4). Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos won their ninth consecutive doubles match at the No. 2 spot, picking up a 6-3 victory.
The final two matches would head to a tiebreaker, with the Cavaliers taking 7-5 and 7-3 decisions at the No. 3 and 1 spots, respectively, to jump out to the early lead.
Undeterred, Wake Forest came out in singles, taking the first set on the four necessary courts to complete the tournament run. Virginia's lead grew to 2-0 after Siddhant Banthia fell at the No. 6 spot, setting up a string of four consecutive victories by the Deacs to capture the hardware.
Freshman Melios Efstathiou trailed early in his No. 5 singles match, 1-3, before winning 11 of the next 12 games en route to a 6-3, 6-1 win to pull the Deacs within one.
No. 14 Borna Gojo squared off against No. 5 Carl Soderlund on the top singles court and earned a late break to secure the opening set, 6-4. Gojo cruised from then on, dominating the second set, 6-2, to level the score at 2-all. For his efforts, Gojo was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Rrezart Cungu saved his best match of the tournament for the finale, as he dominated Gianni Ross at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-2, to pull the Deacs within one point of victory at 3-2.
It would come down to Botzer and Chrysochos at the No. 3 and 2 spots to see who could clinch the match for the Demon Deacons. Botzer had taken his first set, 7-5, while Chrysochos dropped an opening-set tiebreaker, 6-7(3).
Botzer was even throughout much of the second set while Chrysochos fell into an early hole, 1-5. The senior would not go down quietly, coming all the way back to take a 6-5 lead in the second set. Meanwhile, Botzer's match would go to a second-set tiebreaker, where he trailed, 1-5, before mounting an impressive comeback.
A double-fault by Virginia's Henrik Wiersholm gave Botzer match point at 7-6, and Wiersholm return on the ensuing point sailed long, sending the Deacs into celebration mode.
The Demon Deacons will learn their path to a potential second-straight NCAA Title on Monday, April 29, when the tournament field is announced a 6 p.m. (ET).
