No. 17 Miami Takes Series-Opener From Deacs, 7-3

5/10/2019 10:11:00 PM | Baseball

Patrick Frick, Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour had two hits apiece for Wake Forest.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 17-ranked Miami collected 15 hits, defeating Wake Forest by a 7-3 score in the series-opener at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday night.

Raymond Gil (5-for-5, 2 2B, 3 runs) and Michael Amditis (4-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) accounted for more than half of those hits to lead the Hurricanes (35-15, 15-10 ACC) past the Demon Deacons (28-21, 12-13 ACC).

Wake Forest was paced by Patrick Frick, Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour with two hits apiece, while Brendan Tinsman added a double and two walks.

Gil hit an RBI double to put Miami on the board in the first inning, but the nation's RBI leader, Seymour, tied it up with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Hurricanes took the lead for good with a two-run single by Amditis in the top of the fourth.

Bruce Steel hit a two-out, RBI triple to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Miami added two more with an Amditis RBI double and sac fly in the top of the sixth.

Wake Forest's best chance came in the bottom of the eighth. The Deacs loaded the bases on singles from Lanzilli and Seymour and a walk by Michael Ludowig. Tinsman then drew a run-scoring walk to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the next two hitters struck out to leave the bases loaded.

Alex Toral knocked in a pair on a two-run single in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring. Gregory Veliz finished a five-out save with a strikeout and double play in the ninth for Miami.

Miami starter Brian Van Belle allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over 6.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 8-2.

The Deacon pitching staff was led by Bobby Hearn, who threw 2.0 shutout innings in relief. Antonio Menendez also struck out the only batter he faced in relief.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra, with the series finale slated for Monday night on ESPNU.
