MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team advanced to the 2019 NCAA Championships with a third place finish at the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional. The Demon Deacons shot 6-under during Wednesday's final round at TPC Myrtle Beach to finish the event at 15-under.
The top five finishers at the event advanced to the NCAA Championships, held May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark. Illinois won the regional at 25-under, followed by Ohio State at 20-under. Wake Forest (15-under), Cal (14-under) and UNLV (8-under) also advanced from Myrtle Beach.
Wake Forest advanced to the NCAA Championship from regional play for the 17th time since the NCAA adopted the current format in 1989. The Demon Deacons are making their first trip to the NCAA Championships since 2016.
"We had a solid day, with everyone at or under par all day, which was important," said head coach Jerry Haas. "When you come to regionals, it is a very tough week. You can have a great year and have one bad tournament at a particular time and you feel like you wasted your year. I am excited for these guys to go to Arkansas. We have a very good chance to do well there. We need to be prepared and ready to go, maybe talk a little bit about course management in the mean time. You can tell how happy and excited they are, and a little relieved, to advance and have the chance to compete on that stage."
Eugenio Chacarra again led the Demon Deacons on Wednesday, shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round. He finished the tournament at 8-under, T-6th on the individual leaderboard.
Cameron Young shot a final round 1-under 71 to shoot in red figures all three days, finishing the tournament at 5-under par. He finished the event in 10th place, his fifth top-10 of the season.
Alex Fitzpatrick had his low round of the tournament, posting a 2-under final round 70, while Lee Detmer had an even par final round 72 to complete the scoring four for the Deacs. Eric Bae shot a 1-over 73 to finish the tournament at 2-under.
The NCAA Championships begin May 24 at the Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Ark. The top eight teams from the four rounds of stroke play (May 24-27) will play in match play (May 28-29) for the NCAA title.
