WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 21 Wake Forest field hockey team downed No. 15 Stanford, 3-1, on Friday evening at Kentner Stadium.
"It took us a while, I think it took both teams a while," head coach Jen Averill said. "It wasn't a pretty first half, but I really felt strongly that if we could stretch Stanford and open it up. Our game plan was to counter and get underneath them as quickly as possible. We started to see that in moments in the third quarter and then more in the fourth quarter. I really believe in our front five. They are incredibly strong and fast. When they put forth a concerted and connected effort we are dangerous, so hats off to them."
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals opened the scoring late in the half as the nation's leading scorer as Corinne Zanolli sent a missile from the top of the circle for her 15th goal of the season.
The Demon Deacons rallied in the second half with three unanswered goals. Wake dominated the shot count late and controlled possession to seal the win.
Junior Alexis Grippo enjoyed an outstanding game for Wake Forest. She led the Deacs in scoring as she netted her first two goals of the season. The first off an assist from Kelsey Gill, the second from a penalty stroke. Sophomore Laia Vancells put the game away on an empty net goal assisted by Elisha Evans with less than two minutes remaining.
Senior goalie Isla Bint tallied two saves while Nthabi Maine assisted with a game changing defensive save to keep a Stanford penalty corner at bay.
The win is the Demon Deacons' second straight over a ranked opponent and brings the team's record at 3-5.
Up next, Wake Forest hosts Northeastern Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
