No. 18 Wake Forest Splits Doubleheader Against Milwaukee

2/15/2020 9:56:00 PM | Baseball

The Demon Deacons claimed the opener, 19-3, before falling in the nightcap, 8-6.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 18 Wake Forest split a doubleheader against Milwaukee at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday.

The Demon Deacons (2-1) routed the Panthers (1-2) in the opener, 19-3. Milwaukee earned a come-from-behind 8-6 victory in the nightcap.

Wake Forest received a pair of solid starts as Jared Shuster and Antonio Menendez each allowed two earned runs in 6.0 innings. Shuster matched his career high with 12 strikeouts while Menendez added six of his own.

At the plate, DJ Poteet went 5-for-9 with two doubles, a walk and five RBIs to pace the Deacs.

"It's just disappointing, the second game. We had a four-run lead and seven outs to get and we just let it get away from us," head coach Tom Walter said. "We had chances in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth by putting the leadoff runner on, but we couldn't push across a run. Just a really disappointing loss. Offensively we didn't do enough, and I probably left Bobby Hearn in there one hitter too long, probably left Riley Myers in there one or two hitters too long, so this loss is on me."

Wake Forest wraps up the weekend against Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Game 1: Wake Forest 19, Milwaukee 3

The Deacs scored early and often en route to the big victory. Wake plated one run in the first, two in the third, four in the fourth, three in the fifth, six in the seventh and two in the eighth. Twelve different Deacons recorded hits, while 15 reached base via hit or walk.

Brendan Tinsman and Michael Turconi notched two hits, including a home run, four RBIs and a walk apiece. Chris Lanzilli homered for the second time in as many games, while Bobby Seymour, Shane Muntz, Adam Cecere and William Simoneit also recorded two hits each.

Several Deacons tallied their first collegiate hits, including Cecere, Hite Merrifield and John Meany, as all three roped doubles. Pierce Bennett also drew two walks and scored two runs in his debut.

On the mound, Shuster struck out 12 without a walk over 6.0 innings, conceding two runs on five hits. Freshman Eric Adler was strong in his Wake Forest debut, tossing 2.0 shutout frames in relief.

Game 2: Milwaukee 8, Wake Forest 6

The nightcap was a game of runs. Milwaukee scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Wake Forest answered with three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead, but the Panthers tied it with four in the seventh and took the lead with a pair of runs in the ninth.

For the Panthers, Joe Vyskocil delivered the big blow with a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh, while Zach Nogalski and Mitchell Buban had RBIs in the ninth.

Wake Forest brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Seymour walked and Muntz singled, but a line drive from Michael Ludowig was hit straight at the right fielder to end the game.

Poteet had three hits and three RBIs, plus a walk, to lead the Deacs.at the plate.

Menendez allowed just three hits over his 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on four walks while also fanning six. Cole McNamee made his season debut in relief and retired the only two batters he faced, including a strikeout, to strand a runner at third.
