WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team snapped the Louisville Cardinals 27-set win streak on Sunday afternoon in a four-set battle in Varsity Arena.
The Deacs were led offensively by Kamryn Malloy, Ashley Slater and Andrea Fuentes. Malloy tallied a match-high 18 kills and Slater notched 10 while Fuentes orchestrated the offensive with 31 assists. Kalani Whillock registered a match-high 12 digs. Annabelle Daly and Fuentes were right behind her with eight and Malloy chipped in six. Chloe Wilson finished with a match-high five blocks.
How It Happened
The first set started with an early point-for-point battle, with tie scores at five, seven, eight, nine and 10. A kill and service ace from Malloy and blocks from Slater, McSweeney and Wilson helped the Deacs pull away for a 14-11 lead. A kill from Slater maintained the Deacs' lead, 15-12 heading into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, the Cardinals were able to tie it up at 18 but errors on their side and another kill from Slater kept the Deacs' lead, 21-19 to force a Louisville timeout. The Cardinals went on a 5-2 run to close out the set, 25-23.
The second set had a familiar feel, going point-for-point to start but a Louisville kill gave them the momentum and went on a 6-0 run for the 11-4 lead and forced Wake Forest to call a timeout. A 3-0 run from the Deacs later in the set closed the gap to 17-12 and forced a Louisville timeout. The Cardinals maintained control of the rest of the set for a 25-19 win.
Louisville carried the 2-0 advantage into the third set, but the Deacs kept battling, with tie scores at four, five, nine and 10. After a solo block from Slater tied it at 10, Wake Forest went on a 3-0 run that included blocks from Chloe Wilson and Olivia Franke for the 13-10 lead, forcing a Louisville timeout. Out of the break, a couple Louisville errors and a kill from Slater maintained Wake Forest's lead at 15-11. The Deacs continued to capitalize on Cardinal errors to take a 20-15 lead and force another Louisville timeout. Kills from Malloy and Slater kept the Deacs' lead at 23-20 and back-to-back kills from Malloy sealed the set win for the Deacs, 25-21.
The fourth set remained competitive, with tie scores again at four and five and later in the set at 13, 14 and 15. Louisville took the lead at 17-15 and forced a Wake Forest timeout. Out of the break, the Cardinals went on a 5-1 for complete control over the end of the match with a 22-16 lead. Kills from Slater and Franke attempted to cut the deficit at 23-19 but the Cardinals closed the set, 25-19, for the 3-1 match win.
Coach's Comments
"I love the way we competed today; I love how physical we were with our blocking. Louisville is a fast, dynamic, high-energy team and we knew we had to come out and match them to give ourselves a chance. I'm proud of how they came out from the start. We had a couple points get away from us at key moments, but we competed hard and never let up on one of the best teams in the country. We know what we're capable of and we need to keep moving in this direction." – head coach Randi Smart
