No. 21 Demon Deacons Fall in Overtime Against No. 10 North Carolina in ACC Quarterfinals

11/4/2021 10:54:00 PM | Field Hockey

SYRACUSE, N.Y.. -  The No. 21 Wake Forest field hockey team dropped an overtime thriller to No. 10 North Carolina by a final score of 3-2 in the opening round of the 2021 ACC Field Hockey Tournament at J.S. Coyne Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Demon Deacons (7-10) found the back of the net first as Maggie Dickman pushed a Meike Lanckohr pass past the Tar Heels' (11-6) goalkeeper less than four minutes into the match.

After North Carolina tied the contest late in the second quarter, Ashley Hart quickly responded with a diving effort to give Wake Forest a one-goal lead heading into intermission. After a hard-fought third frame, the Tar Heels forced overtime with 10 minutes left in regulation. In the opening overtime frame, North Carolina clinched the sudden death victory following their second penalty corner.

Dickman's score increased her season goal total to seven, which is a career high and finishes tied for the second on the squad. Additionally, Hart netted the second goal of her collegiate career (James Madison, Sept. 12, 2021).

Tori Glaister registered five saves in her 22nd-straight start in goal, increasing her career-best save total to 53. This marked the seventh time this season Glaister recorded at least four saves in a match this season.

Lee Ann Gordon was credited with her second defensive save of the season in the second period.

How It Happened

  • Wake Forest's defense came out strong, denying North Carolina's first corner attempt two minutes into the match.

    • The Tar Heels were unable to attempt a shot as Elisha Evans stole the ball away from the North Carolina attacker.

  • Maggie Dickman tapped the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Meike Lanckohr to put the Deacs on the scoreboard at the four-minute mark.

  • North Carolina pushed their first shot wide with eight minutes left in the first period.

  • The Deacs received their first penalty corner with almost two minutes remaining in the first frame, but a stick obstruction gave the ball back to the Tar Heels.

  • The Deacs took their 1-0 lead into the second frame as both teams just attempted one shot in the opening 15 minutes of game action, with Dickman's goal pushing Wake Forest into the lead.

  • Lee Ann Gordon was credited with a defensive save on North Carolina's second shot of the match to preserve Wake Forest's 1-0 advantage early in the second.

  • North Carolina tied the match at 1 with 4:09 left in the first half off an unassisted goal.

  • Just 24 seconds later, Wake Forest responded as Ashley Hart made a diving effort to give the Deacs a one-goal advantage (2-1) after the first half of game action.

    • Wake Forest took advantage of a North Carolina green card to regain the lead.

    • The Deacs' lone shot attempts back found the back of the net in the first half, while the Tar Heels attempted three shots. Additionally, each team had one penalty corner.

  • The Tar Heels attempted the first shot of the second half at the nine-minute mark of the third quarter following their second corner of the match, but it was pushed wide.

  • Wake Forest produced a huge defensive stand over a three-minute span late in the period as the Deacs held onto their 2-1 lead after denying four shots on four North Carolina penalty corners.

    • Tori Glaister was credited with her first save of the match following the Tar Heels fourth and final penalty corner of the third period.

  • Wake Forest's defense opened the fourth with another huge stand, highlighted by a Glaister save on North Carolina's first shot of the fourth frame.

  • The Tar Heels tied the game at 2 with 10 minutes and 21 seconds remaining in the fourth period.

    • North Carolina found the back of the net after a rebound off Glaister's fifth save of the match.

  • Wake Forest drove deep into North Carolina's defense as Nat Friedman attempted Wake Forest's first shot of the second half with just over three minutes remaining in the match, but the shot was blocked. This marked the last threat of the match as the game was locked at 2 at the end of regulation.

  • 30 seconds into overtime, Wake Forest was awarded a penalty corner but was unable to get a shot off.

  • North Carolina capitalized on their second corner of the overtime period to clinch a 3-2 victory.

Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "No team wants to end their season with a loss. We had ourselves very prepared for this tournament. I stand by my word. I couldn't be more proud of a group of young women that battled. To go from a defensive penalty unit that was giving up cheap goals early in the season to fend off a super-talented squad in North Carolina the way that we did and giving ourselves a chance to stay in the game.

"The reaction of our squad is indicative of Wake Forest hockey. The team and coaching staff are gutted for the seniors. It's a difficult pill to swallow but I am unbelievably proud that we saved the best hockey for our last game."
