Good Evening Demon Deacon Nation!

It's here! Finally! Our fall programs are reporting for preseason camps this week, and our first home event of the year is just a few days away as women's soccer will take the pitch for an exhibition match at Spry Stadium on Monday night!

I am pleased to report that nearly all Wake Forest student-athletes, faculty and staff are now vaccinated and we are following all health and safety protocols set forth by Dr. Chris Ohl and our University leadership to ensure we start the fall semester on the right note!

Today has been a busy one for the Demon Deacons with Coach Clawson behind the microphone in the Sutton Sports Performance Center for his first football press conference of the year, while  Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn and Emilia Migliaccio were both on the course in match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur

Rising junior Kuehn shot five-under par yesterday to earn medalist honors and is now ranked 23rd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Migliaccio won today on the 22nd hole in match play to advance to tomorrow's round of 32. You can follow the action in the U.S. Women's Amateur on the Golf Channel and live scoring will be posted here.

Before we jump into all the exciting things happening on our beautiful Reynolda campus, I know many of our loyal readers were surprised with the events of the last few weeks as the Universities of Texas and Oklahoma announced their intention to depart the Big 12 Conference and join the Southeastern Conference. Having served eight years from 2009-2017 as athletics director at Kansas State and experienced the realignment era of 2010-2013 first hand, I am saddened by another disruption of the historic and longstanding affiliations and rivalries that make college athletics unique and special.

As an "ACC kid" who grew up on Tobacco Road, I believe the strong leadership of recently minted Commissioner Dr. Jim Phillips and the deep unity of our membership and longstanding commitment to the highest level of athletics and academic excellence make the future of the Atlantic Coast Conference brighter than ever. The unparalleled exposure brought to Wake Forest, our fellow ACC institutions and our world class student-athletes thanks to our long-term ESPN agreement, the rapidly growing ACC Network places us in an enviable position as the college world continues to evolve. I am looking forward to seeing lots of Demon Deacon student-athletes and teams atop the ACC leaderboard again this fall!

Football Preseason Watch Lists Full of Deacs'! Best Fan Experience in North Carolina Returns Soon!
Your Wake Forest Demon Deacons are the only ACC school to have a player on the John Mackey (tight end), Doak Walker (running back), Biletnikoff (wide receiver) and Paul Hornung (all-around) Award Watch Lists! Overall, Wake Forest has had football players garner preseason accolades from nine position-specific awards and multiple news and media outlets.

As the 2021 college football season nears and the entire Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community is ready to get back together, Wake Forest Athletics continues to roll out unique ticket options for all fans to ensure they have a seat inside Truist Field this fall. From individual game tickets now on sale for all contests, to new and innovative group sales packages and extremely popular and affordable 4-pack offerings, multiple sellouts are expected to see the team boasting 20 returning offensive and defensive starters and riding the Atlantic Coast Conference's third-longest bowl appearance streak.

The new DEACTOWN Fan Zone, presented by North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance, will help deliver The Best Fan Experience in North Carolina. Available quantities of several ticket packages are running very low so don't miss your chance to take advantage of these great deals!

Finally, Wake Forest's perennially NCAA contending soccer teams are also planning for 100 percent capacity at Spry Stadium this fall. With brand new reserved chair back seats and numerous ticket options available, fans can enjoy Demon Deacons futbol this fall!

Record 289 Demon Deacons Named to ACC Academic Honor Roll
Speaking of A World Class Student-Athlete Experience, a record total of 289 Wake Forest student-athletes earned spots on the 2020-21 Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll. This is the third consecutive year Wake Forest has seen a record number of student-athletes on the list. An impressive 51 percent of Demon Deacon student-athletes were honored by the conference!

I am very proud of our student-athletes and grateful to our academic services staff and our nationally-acclaimed faculty for all they did to facilitate an innovative learning experience for all Wake Forest students during an unprecedented year.

Upgraded Lighting for Indoor Tennis Center Delivers Sustainability Benefits Too
Big thanks are in order to our University facilities crew which just completed an LED lighting upfit project for the indoor tennis center. This project not only improves visibility for Demon Deacon men's and women's tennis next ACC and NCAA runs, but will also save thousands of dollars per year in energy and cooling costs.

How can Wake Forest Athletics best communicate with you?
I continue to receive great feedback from fans, student-athletes and coaches about the job our media relations and digital staff members have done completely overhauling our communications strategies, including our social media presence.

As we assess the most effective methods to share Demon Deacon stories and communicate with all our valued constituents and ensure we are prioritizing resources towards the most impactful mediums, we will no longer produce the Gold Rush magazine. I encourage you to stay up to date on all things Demon Deacons through stories on GoDeacs.com, content on our social media platforms or our direct-communication emails including From the Quad or the daily feature story each morning in the Deacon Sports Xtra. We will soon introduce unique printed items to be mailed to our loyal supporters. Fans are also encouraged to subscribe to the Wake Forest Magazine.

From the Quad Big 3
And finally, here are today's Big 3 ways to help:
  1. As we officially wrap up the 2020-21 academic year, be sure to check out our special 2020-21 Wake Forest Year in Review that will be shared later this week on GoDeacs.com
  2. Read about how Wake Forest's Freedom School is providing 65 Winston-Salem rising 3rd through 8th grade kids with a free, six-week, literacy-based summer program.
  3. Check the sport schedules on GoDeacs.com and pick a Demon Deacon "away" contest to attend this fall. Regardless of the sport, it is always inspirational for Wake Forest student-athletes to see Demon Deacon fans in the stands on the road!
From the five Wake Foresters that were awarded Fulbright Scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year, to Jeff Teague winning an NBA Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks and watching the incredible playoff run by Chris Paul and Phoenix Suns, and women's basketball standout Jewel Spear representing Team USA this month at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary, I am extremely proud to be a Demon Deacon!

Thanks for your support, please get vaccinated, wear your Black and Gold every #WFFriday, and as always, send me your comments, ideas, and questions at wfuad@wfu.edu.

Go Deacs!
