
No. 13 Wake Forest Defeats Brown in Regular Season Road Finale

This year’s Demon Deacon squad became the fourth Wake Forest field hockey team since 2010 to reach 13 wins.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 13 Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Brown, 4-0, in its final road match of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
The shutout victory helped this year's squad become the fourth Wake Forest (13-4, 4-1 ACC) team since 2010 to earn at least 13 wins in a season (2014, 2015, 2018, 2022).
Overall, the Deacs head into next Friday's regular season finale against Syracuse winners of 13 of its last 15 matches, outscoring opponents 43-14 during that stretch.
Additionally, Wake Forest finished the regular season with a 34-16 advantage in non-conference matches, posting a 9-3 record.
Ashley Hart, Meike Lanckohr, Lee Ann Gordon and Anna Gwiazdzinski led Wake Forest offensively.
The Deacs got off to a fast start thanks to first-quarter goals from Hart (two-minute mark) and Lanckohr (14-minute mark). The Deacs head into its regular season finale outscoring opponents 16-2 in the opening quarter of matches this season.
Gordon found the back of the net for the first time this season in the third quarter before Gwiazdzinki secured the non-conference win with her score in the 57th-minute.
Nat Friedman dished out a career-high tying and game-high two assists, while Sky Caron and Hart were also credited with an assist.
Ellie Todd notched a trio of saves in her fifth shutout of the season. In 15 appearances this season, the Boston, Mass. native has made 50 defensive stops.
The Deacs have now given up less than two goals in its last 11 matches, dating back to its 1-0 shutout victory against Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 18. Overall, the Deacs have held opponents to two goals or less in 15 matches this season.
How It Happened

For the second-straight match, Wake Forest attacked from the first whistle. After a trio of penalty corners in the opening minutes, Ashley Hart gave the Deacs a 1-0 lead as the sophomore deflected a Sky Caron pass into the back of the net.

In a matter of minutes, the Deacs attempted a flurry of shots following two more penalty corners.

The attempts from Anna Gwiazdzinski, Meike Lanckohr and Brooke McCusker were all blocked or landed wide of the goal.

Off a deflection, Brown's goalkeeper made her first save on a Grace Demotte strike right in front of the goal.

Lanckohr was able to add her ninth goal of the season in the final minute of the second half to double Wake Forest's lead (2-0).

For the second-straight match, Wake Forest's defense held its opponent shotless in the opening quarter.

The Deacs continued to maintain control during the second period, attempting two shots while taking one penalty corner and conceding just one attempted shot.

Ellie Todd corralled her first save on Brown's first attempt at the 27-minute mark.

After 30 minutes of play, Wake Forest led 2-0 with advantages in shots (13-1), shots on goal (5-1) and corners (7-0).

The Demon Deacon defensive penalty corner unit stood strong during Brown's first corner opportunity at the 34-minute mark, not allowing a shot and preserving its 2-0 lead.

Todd notched her second save of the match moments later, denying Brown's second shot of the day in the third quarter.

Lee Ann Gordon added to Wake Forest's lead (3-0) in the third quarter, deflecting a Nat Friedman strike past Brown's goalkeeper.

The Demon Deacons' third score came after its 10th penalty corner of the match.

Todd and the Demon Deacon defense came up big in the fourth quarter, denying multiple attempts from the Bears to preserve Wake Forest's three-goal lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Both teams' attack started to pick up in the fourth quarter as the teams combined for 14 shots and eight corners.

Anna Gwiazdzinski found the back of the net late in the fourth quarter to secure a 4-0 win in Wake Forest's final road match of the regular season.
