No. 12 Wake Forest hosts No. 9 Syracuse in Senior Night Showdown

Prior to Friday’s match, nine Demon Deacons will be honored for their contributions and commitment to the Wake Forest field hockey program: Madison Baciuska, Sky Caron, Abby Carpenter, Maggie Dickman, Nat Friedman, Lilly Lancaster, Meike Lanckohr, Sloan Isen and Kennedy Wainwright.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team finishes the 2022 regular season with another ranked ACC showdown against No. 9 Syracuse on Friday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. inside Kentner Stadium . 

The regular season finale is set for a 5 p.m. start and can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

The No. 13 Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Brown, 4-0, in its final road match of the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Goldberger Family Field. 

Ashley Hart, Meike Lanckohr, Lee Ann Gordon and Anna Gwiazdzinski led Wake Forest offensively. 

The Deacs got off to a fast start thanks to first-quarter goals from Hart (two-minute mark) and Lanckohr (14-minute mark). The Deacs head into its regular season finale outscoring opponents 16-2 in the opening quarter of matches this season. 

Gordon found the back of the net for the first time this season in the third quarter before Gwiazdzinki secured the non-conference win with her score in the 57th-minute. Nat Friedman dished out a career-high tying and game-high two assists, while Sky Caron and Hart were also credited with an assist. 

Wake Forest highlights                                                                                                                                                                                      

  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 12 in the ninth 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. This tied Wake Forest's highest ranking of the season (week six). Additionally, this marked the 45th-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 48 of the 49 weekly polls. 

  • Jennifer Averill secured her 400th win as the head coach of Wake Forest Field Hockey on Friday, Sept. 16 with the Deacs' 4-3 victory against Richmond. In 31 seasons at the helm of the program, Averill holds an overall record of 409-222-3 and an overall mark of 429-254-6 in 32 years of coaching.

  • Prior to Friday's match, nine members of this year's team will be honored for their contributions and commitment to the Wake Forest field hockey program: Sky Caron, Abby Carpenter, Maggie Dickman, Nat Friedman, Lilly Lancaster, Meike Lanckohr, Sloan Isen and Kennedy Wainwright

  • Wake Forest has posted win streaks of five (Sept. 2-Sept. 18) and six (Sept. 25-Oct. 14) this season. Currently, Wake Forest heads into the winners of 13 of their last 15 matches. outscoring opponents 43-14 during that stretch.  

  • Wake Forest's shutout victory in its final road match of the regular season helped this year's squad become the fourth Wake Forest team since 2010 to earn at least 13 wins in a season (2014, 2015, 2018, 2022). With a win on Friday, the Deacs would become the first team since the 2014 ACC Champions to post 14 victories in a single season. 

  • Additionally, Wake Forest finished the regular season with a 34-16 advantage in non-conference matches, posting a 9-3 record.

  • The Deacs have now given up less than two goals in its last 11  matches, dating back to its 1-0 shutout victory against Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 18. Overall, the Deacs have held opponents to two goals or less in 15 matches this season. Furthermore, the Deacs have only allowed four goals in conference play, highlighted by three-straight shutouts against nationally-ranked foes Duke, Louisville and Virginia.  

  • The Demon Deacons head into the weekend leading the ACC in penalty corners (124), goals off corners (15) and assists (46), while ranking second in shots and third in scoring.

  • Wake Forest has outscored opponents 16-2 in the first quarter this season and has found the back of the net first in all 13 of its victories. 

  • Meike Lanckohr and Grace Delmotte are among the best passers in the ACC. Lanckohr leads the conference in assists (10),  while Delmotte ranks third (9). Both Lanckohr (nine) and Maxwell (eight) also rank in the top 10 in goals. 

  • Freshman goalkeeper Ellie Todd has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Todd earned a trio of wins during Wake Forest's perfect week against Davidson, No. 7 Louisville and VCU, notching seven stops while allowing just two goals in 180 minutes of action in goal. The Boston, Mass. native was instrumental in Wake Forest's ACC victory over the nationally-ranked Cardinals as Todd posted her third shutout of the season, making five defensive stops in the Demon Deacons' first top-10 win since 2018. Todd earned the first conference accolade of her career after pitching her third shutout of the season in Wake Forest's ACC home-opening victory against No. 22 Duke on Sunday, Oct. 2. The Boston, Mass. native tallied five saves in 60 minutes of game action in goal to earn the seventh win of her freshman season. Todd registered a career performance in the cage in Wake Forest's ACC opener at North Carolina. The Boston, Mass. native became the first Demon Deacon to tally double-digit saves in a match since 2015, registering a career-high 12 stops. Todd currently is tied for the most saves in a single match this season across the ACC and ranks second in overall saves this season. 

  • In addition to her conference-leading assist mark, the All-American was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Sept. 13.  Lanckohr earned the second conference player of the week nod of her career after leading the Deacs in a perfect 2-0 weekend on the Wake Forest's West Coast road trip with a team-high 12 points, netting a team-high five goals and two assists. Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season in 2021 after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54). 

  • A number of Deacs have been able to net goals this season as eight players have scored multiple goals this season: Meike Lanckohr (9), Hannah Maxwell (8), Sky Caron (7), Ashley Hart (6), Grace Delmotte (5), Anna Gwiazdziski (4), Maggie Dickman (2) and Abby Carpenter (2).  

  • Lee Ann Gordon competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4.
