Second-Seeded Wake Forest Shuts Out Seventh-Seeded Duke in ACC Championship Quarterfinal

11/1/2022 5:57:00 PM | Field Hockey

A second-quarter goal from Meike Lanckohr and Ellie Todd’s sixth shutout of the season helped Wake Forest move into the semifinals of the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship.

DURHAM, N.C. - The second-seeded Wake Forest field hockey advanced to the ACC Championship Semifinals with a 1-0 shutout victory over seventh-seeded Duke on Tuesday afternoon inside Jack Katz Stadium.

The tournament victory helped this year's squad become the first Wake Forest (15-4) team since 2008 to win at least 15 matches in a season. Overall, the Deacs have won 15 of its last 17 matches.

Additionally, the opening round victory marked Wake Forest's 10th win over Big Four rival Duke (7-11) in the conference tournament.

Wake Forest has now won six-straight matches against conference opponents, outscoring league foes 15-4 this season, highlighted by five shutouts against nationally-ranked Duke (twice), Louisville, Virginia and Syracuse.

After both teams were held scoreless for the opening 28 minutes of the match, First Team All-ACC selection Meike Lanckohr got Wake Forest on the scoreboard with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half.

Lanckohr's 10th goal of the season came after the Demon Deacons' second penalty corner of the match. Sky Caron and Lee Ann Gordon were credited with an assist on the score.

All-ACC honoree Ellie Todd blanked the Blue Devils for the second time this year, her sixth shutout of the season.

Wake Forest's defensive penalty corner unit was huge down the stretch, denying four corners and five shots in the final 15 minutes.

The Deacs have given up less than two goals in its last 13 matches, dating back to its 1-0 shutout victory against Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 18. Overall, the Deacs have held opponents to two goals or less in 17 of 19 matches this season.

How It Happened
  • After the teams juggled for possession over the opening minutes, Ellie Todd denied the match's first shot attempt for her first save at the five-minute mark.
  • Three minutes later, Duke earned its first penalty corner of the match. Wake Forest's defensive penalty corner stood tall, blocking the shot.
  • With 31 seconds remaining in the quarter, Anna Gwiazdzinski received a deep outlet pass and fired Wake Forest's first shot, but the attempt was wide of the goal. The teams went into the second period tied at zero.
  • Hannah Maxwell took an Immie Gillgrass pass and took the ball into the circle and found the back of the net, but the goal was waived off as the match remained scoreless.
  • Wake Forest took advantage of a pair of penalty corners at the end of the second quarter as a Meike Lanckohr strike ricocheted into the back of the net with a little over a minute left in the first half.
  • After Maxwell pushed the first attempt of the third quarter wide, a Brooke McCusker shot following Wake Forest's first corner opportunity of the second half was blocked with 8:30 remaining.
    • The Deacs were awarded the penalty corner after the ball hit a Duke defender's foot during a fastbreak by McCusker.
  • Maxwell and McCusker's attempts marked the only shots by either side in the third quarter as Wake Forest took its 1-0 lead into the final period.
  • Wake Forest's defensive penalty corner unit once again denied a Duke corner with eight minutes remaining in the match to preserve the Deacs' 1-0 advantage.
    • McCusker blocked the Blue Devils' first shot before another Duke attempt went high.
  • Moments later, the Deacs once again denied a Duke penalty corner with a pair of blocked shots.
  • After Duke stopped a Wake Forest penalty corner, the Blue Devils pulled their goalie. Wake Forest's defense stood tall over the final three minutes, denying two more corners by the Blue Devils to secure the quarterfinal victory.
Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "We knew today's match was going to be a battle. All records aside and a clean slate for everyone in this tournament. All these teams are respectable opponents. It took a look for us to get the win today. I thought we played reckless. In doing so, it's pretty amazing to see players step up and really try to organize and maintain their composure in big moments. I am super proud. Sometimes a frustrating win is a great win. We will take a look at this and we are really fortunate to be moving on."
