Happy Gasparilla Bowl #WFFriday!
With so many folks dealing with severe winter weather and travel challenges today, I must admit that I'm feeling a tad-bit guilty as I sit on the hotel balcony overlooking the beautiful Tampa waterfront finishing up this special edition of From the Quad. While it has been a fun week for our football team in the Florida sunshine, we know many members of Deacon Nation have experienced a tough week of weather and we wish everyone the safest possible holiday weekend.
Meanwhile both our basketball teams earned a festive holiday break with two big wins as the Deacon men's team downed No. 14 Duke in front of an excited crowd inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday, and the Wake Forest women's squad remained undefeated at home with a victory yesterday afternoon over 9-1 Rhode Island!
It's been fun to see Deacon Nation roll into Tampa in full Old Gold & Black force as we gear up for tonight's Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl at Raymond James Stadium against Missouri.
Our student-athletes, coaches and support staff have enjoyed a terrific week in Florida, including a fun outing to Busch Gardens, an exclusive trip to the MacDill Air Force Base on Tuesday, and a meaningful community engagement on Wednesday. The weather has been tremendous for our players, staff and fans in Florida. Additionally, we are grateful for the hospitality at Tampa Marriott Water Street, and our practice sites at Carrollwood Day School and at USF.
Meanwhile after a fun day at Busch Gardens on Thursday, the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black, our cheerleaders, Dazzling Deacs, and the Deacon persevered through a light rain at yesterday's afternoon block party on the waterfront - providing enough energy for both school's fans since the Missouri squad was unable to make it!
Here in Tampa, it has been a pleasure to work with Gasparilla Bowl Executive Director Scott Glaser and his staff, as they provided this special postseason opportunity for our student-athletes. We are excited to kickoff the game tonight on national television on ESPN at 6:30 p.m.
Once again, Deacon Nation is showing up at bowl time and responses to our annual pregame bowl tailgate party were so great that we've already moved to a bigger space, inside Raymond James Stadium in the West Hyundai Club; and there was a waitlist for fans wanting to attend! Please be aware that Raymond James Stadium is a totally cashless venue and only very small size bags are allowed (4.6" x 6.5"). We are so grateful that we were able to sell out our tickets allotment for this big time bowl game in Tampa! There are still game tickets available for today's game, beginning at just $50! If you're in the area, come out as Wake Forest looks to defeat its second Southeastern Conference opponent this fall!
Behind the tremendous leadership of Coach Dave Clawson and his staff, we can achieve an eight-win campaign for just the 10th time in program history. Additionally, December graduate Sam Hartman will set the ACC record for career touchdown passes with his first scoring throw tonight!
I am so grateful for the hard work and tireless efforts of our football staff over the past few weeks. While preparing for today's game and the opportunity to win a bowl championship, they have been traveling all across the country to sign the very best class this past Wednesday on National Signing Day. Click here to read about the 19 new Demon Deacons that will join our Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community in the coming weeks and year.
This season also reminded us how intercollegiate athletics brings generations together to support a common cause. We witnessed record numbers of students and fans coming out to games at Truist Field. We are excited to create more memories as we move into 2023 looking to Win Championships while creating a World Class Student-Athlete Experience and providing the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina!
With that, let's continue to raise the standard and have another great home environment next fall inside Truist Field! Season ticket deposits for the 2023 season are available now for $50 per seat. New or existing season ticket holders can visit GoDeacs.com/Tickets to make their deposit online or email the Wake Forest Ticket Office at tix@wfu.edu over the holidays.
Men's & Women's Basketball Back at Home Next Week
Wake Forest women's basketball is back in action for its first ACC home game on Thursday, Dec. 29 vs. Pitt at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale for as low as $10 and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Meanwhile, Coach Steve Forbes and our men's team returns to Joel Coliseum on Saturday (New Year's Eve) for a noon tipoff against Virginia Tech. The quickest and most efficient way to order single, package and season tickets is to visit GoDeacs.com/Tickets and purchase online, or email the Wake Forest Ticket Office at tix@wfu.edu over the holidays.
We continue to have exciting moments with each of the teams, as highlighted on Tuesday when Coach Steve Forbes' squad led wire-to-wire in their win over the Blue Devils and he was mobbed by his players in the locker room after the big win. Meanwhile, yesterday our women's team played stellar defense as they held Rhode Island to just 26 percent shooting from the field. Moments like this come with a lot of hard work and preparation by our coaches, support staff and student-athletes, and they lead to special moments where our community comes together to Roll the Quad!
With two home games next week as I mentioned earlier, don't miss out!
Exciting Tennis Action Awaits at Leighton Courts & Wake Forest's Indoor Tennis Center
Wake Forest men's and women's tennis schedules for this spring have now been released! With action getting underway within the first few weeks of January, I want to remind everyone that our tennis matches are FREE and we have some talented student-athletes to come watch and compete!
On the men's side, Wake Forest returns nine Demon Deacons from a season ago, including 2022 All-ACC second team honoree Melios Efstathiou and 2022 All-ACC third team selections Jurabek Karimov and Filippo Moroni. Meanwhile, Wake Forest's women's squad saw its players combine for 34 singles wins and 19 doubles victories in fall play over the past few months. Individually, Maddie Lynch led the way with an 8-2 singles record while No. 3-ranked Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth went 7-3 in doubles.
Wake Forest Baseball Season Tickets Make for Great Holiday Gift
Our ticket office recently announced innovative season ticketing plans for fans to come out to watch our nationally-ranked Diamond Deacs this spring at David F. Couch Ballpark. Fresh off a 41-win season and 2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament selection, an exciting year awaits for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.
