Wake Forest Claims Three Medals On Final Day Of ACC Outdoor Championships

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest track & field program rounded out the 2022 ACC Outdoor Championships with three Demon Deacons claiming three medals on Saturday at Morris Williams Stadium.
Thomas Vanoppen won the title in the men's 1500-meter, Tony Jones earned bronze in the men's high jump and Aaron Las Heras took bronze in the men's 5000-meter to highlight Wake Forest individual performances on the day.
In the team standings, the Wake Forest men's squad finished 10th with 42 points over the course of the three-day championship meet. The Deacs had four podium finishes and six scoring events, placing the highest since 2013.
The Wake Forest women took 12th place with 17 points. The women of Wake Forest had one medal winner and three scoring events throughout the meet.
Thomas Wins Gold
Vanoppen made his impact on the program by winning the conference title in the men's 1500-meter Saturday afternoon. The Westerlo, Belgium native came-from-behind in the final straight away to claim the first Wake Forest student-athlete to claim the ACC title in the 1500-meter event since Nathan Sisco in 2001.
Jones Leaps for Bronze
Tony Jones leaped for an impressive 2.15m to win a medal at ACC Outdoor Championships, taking third in the men's high jump. That is his second ACC medal of his collegiate career.
Las Heras Caps Off
In the final event for the Demon Deacons, Aaron Las Heras took home his second-career medal with a 13:38.02 personal best in the 5000-meter event. The performance marked Wake Forest's second fastest time in school history to cap off the tremendous weekend.
