Five Deacs Primed for NCAA Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The Wake Forest track and field team has arrived in Eugene, Oregon, ahead of the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships that will take place Wednesday through Saturday (June 8-11). The Deacs have five entries in the meet with three men and two women.
The Demon Deacons are represented by Zach Facioni (5000m), Tony Jones (High Jump) and Thomas Vanoppen (1500m) for the men and Anna Bush (Heptathlon) and Emma Soderstrom (High Jump) for the women.
Zach Is Back
In 2021, Zach Facioni earned a trip to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his track and field career. In 2022, he is making his return after he placed third in the 5000m semifinal. He paced to a 13:44.04 time and placed 10th overall.
Leap to Eugene
Tony Jones punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on his last attempt at 2.18m, tying his personal best. He finished tied for sixth in the event, securing his berth to Eugene. This is his first trip to Eugene after his incredible jumping collegiate career at Wake Forest, he owns the indoor and outdoor high jump school records.
Vanoppen Zooming
The graduate student Thomas Vanoppen earned his trip to the championships after placing third in the NCAA East Prelims 1500m quarterfinal, pacing to a 3:41.31 time and 10th overall finish.
Bush Finished Top-18
At the ACC Outdoor Championships, Anna Bush produced a bronze medal and set a new school record. With her mark of 5675 points, Bush punched her ticket to the championships, placing her 18th in the nation.
Emma Breaks School Record
Junior Emma Soderstrom punched her ticket to the big show with a 1.84m leap at the NCAA East Prelims in Bloomington, Indiana. The Gothernburg, Sweden native broke Wake Forest legend Trina Bindel's school record she recorded back in 1996.
The meet will take place at Hayward Field for the second straight season. The men will have competition days on Wednesday and Friday while the women are set to compete on Thursday and Saturday. The four-day meet will be covered in its entirety on the ESPN networks.
The meet will be shown live on Wednesday and Thursday on ESPNU, Friday's coverage will be on ESPN2, and Saturday's finale will air on ESPN. Dedicated live streams to field events will also be available as well. For full listings of the TV info, visit ncaa.com.
