No. 20 Wake Forest Hosts ACC-Big Ten Challenge to Begin New Season

The No. 20 Demon Deacons open the 2022 season by hosting No. 5 Iowa and No. 3 Michigan inside Kentner Stadium as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the first time since 2017 Wake Forest has hosted the yearly competition.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 20 Demon Deacons open the 2022 season by hosting No. 5 Iowa (Aug. 26) and No. 3 Michigan (Aug. 28) inside Kentner Stadium as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the first time since 2017 Wake Forest hosts the yearly competition. 

Since 1998, Wake Forest has hit the turf against both the Hawkeyes and Wolverines in every season except 2020.

Friday's season opener against the Hawkeyes can be streamed live on ACC Network Extra at 5 p.m., while Sunday's matchup against the Wolverines will be live on ACC Network at 1:30 p.m.

At each Wake Forest match this weekend, the first 100 fans will receive a Wake Forest field hockey t-shirt to cheer on the team. A voucher given out at the start of the game to be picked up at halftime.

Wake Forest opens a new campaign in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against the Hawkeyes and Wolverines for the second-straight season. Last year, the Deacs faced off against the pair of non-conference foes in Iowa City. 

Wake Forest is 11-11 all-time against Iowa while holding a 20-7 mark against Michigan.

  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 20 in the 2022 Preseason National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.This marks the 37th-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 40 of the 41 weekly polls. Last season, Wake Forest opened the season at No. 11. In 2020, Wake Forest rose to No. 9 for two-straight polls from April 6-20, its highest NFHCA ranking ever.

  • Head coach Jennifer Averill enters her 31st season at the helm of the Wake Forest field hockey program, amassing an overall record of 396-218-3 as a Demon Deacon and an overall mark of 416-250-6 in 32 years of coaching.

  • Wake Forest returns 18 players from last year's 2021 squad and welcomes eight newcomers to the program. The returners made 190 appearances last season, eight of which appeared in all 17 matches. 

  • All-American Meike Lanckohr was named to the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason All-ACC Field Hockey Team, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54).

  • Tori Glaister returns for her junior season after appearing and starting in all 17 games in goal last season. Glaister posted a career-best seven wins and made a career-high 53 saves, registering a 61.6 percent save percentage (150 shots faced). The London, England native allowed just two goals or less in 13 matches while registering multiple saves in 11 contests while allowing just 1.1 goals per game in  Demon Deacon wins.

  • Grace Delmotte played for Field Hockey Canada's 2022 Women's World Cup roster. Delmotte was one of 18-athletes selected to represent Canada in the country's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Canada defeated Team USA for the bronze medal at the 2022 Pan American Cup to qualify for the World Cup. Delmotte was one of four recent graduates of Team Canada's Junior National Program to land on the World Cup roster. The junior earned her first senior cap in her first World Cup action on opening night against Spain. On July 7, Delmotte found the back of the net to put Canada 1-0 just five minutes into its match against Argentina. 

  • Lee Ann Gordon competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4. 

  • Sky Caron (Boston College) and Anna Gwiazdzinski (Indiana) join the 2022 squad as transfers with tons of Division I  experience. Caron appeared in 71 matches over four years, while Gwiazdzinski hit the turf in 33 matches in two seasons at Indiana.

Wake Forest ends its season-opening homestand with a non-conference matchup against Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. inside Kentner Stadium. The match will be available on ACC Network Extra. 

The Deacs head out on the road for the first time of the new season against UC Davis (Sept. 9) and Cal (Sept. 11) before returning home for their last home non-conference match of September against Richmond on Sept. 16.
