
Hart’s Overtime Goal Lifts No. 15 Wake Forest to Victory at App State

Ashley Hart notched the golden goal in the 61st minute to secure the Demon Deacons’ sixth victory of the season.
BOONE, N.C. - Ashley Hart's golden goal in the 61st minute lifted the No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win at Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon at Adcock Field.
Wake Forest (6-3, 0-1 ACC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as All-American Meike Lanckohr and Hannah Maxwell found the back in the opening four minutes.
Both goals came after perfectly-executed penalty corner opportunities. Lanckohr's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Lee Ann Gordon and Maxwell, while Lanckohr picked up an assist on Maxwell's score.
Overall, Wake Forest has outscored opponents 12-1 in first quarters this year and have scored first in all six of its wins in 2022.
App State (4-4, 1-1 MAC) tied the match with just over five minutes remaining with two fourth-quarter goals to force overtime.
Almost two minutes into overtime, Hart sealed Wake Forest's sixth non-conference victory of the season after receiving an outlet pass from Abby Carpenter and firing the ball past the Mountaineer goalkeeper.
Hart is now second on the squad with a career-high five goals this season.
Fresh off a career performance on Friday, Ellie Todd tallied four saves on six App State shots on goal in 61 minutes of action.
Wake Forest's defense continued to impress, holding an opponent to two goals or less for the seventh time this season.
The victory over the Mountaineers also extends the Deacs' winning streak over App State to 30-straight matches, dating back to 1992. Additionally over this streak, the Demon Deacons are +156 in goal differential.

Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to first quarter goals from Meike Lanckohr and Hannah Maxwell in the opening minutes.

Both teams traded corner opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half. Todd picked up two more saves as the Deacs continued to hold the Mountaineers scoreless.

Maggie Dickman fired a shot on goal a minute later, but the Mountaineer goalkeeper denied the strike.

Dickman attempted another shot with less than two minutes remaining, but it was pushed wide. The shot came after a Wake Forest penalty corner and was the final strike of regulation as the match went into overtime.

Just 1:51 minutes into overtime, Ashley Hart notched the golden goal after an outlet pass from Abby Carpenter to secure the 3-2 victory.
