No. 17 Wake Forest Begins a Four-Game Homestand; Hosts No. 22 Duke Friday and Davidson Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Coming off a thrilling overtime victory, the No. 17 Wake Forest field hockey team returns to Kentner Stadium for a two-week, four-match homestand. The team starts the weekend with a contest against the No. 22 Duke Blue Devils in its ACC home opener before taking on the Davidson Wildcats in the team's ninth non-conference matchup of the season. 

The Big Four, ranked matchup between the Demon Deacons (6-3, 0-1 ACC) and Blue Devils (4-6, 0-2 ACC) is slated to start at 2 p.m. Friday, September 30th. A stream will be available on ACC Network Extra. 

Wake Forest's match against the Wildcats (3-6, 0-2 A10) will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 2nd.

Opponent/Series History
Although Wake Forest trails the all-time series with Duke by a margin of 46-35, the Deacs have defeated the Blue Devils in the last two matchups. Wake Forest has outscored Duke by a tally of 7-2 in those matches.

The Deacs hold a 37-17-2 all-time mark against the Wildcats. Wake Forest has beaten Davidson 26-straight times dating back to the 1993 season.

Last Time Out
Ashley Hart's golden goal in the 61st minute lifted the No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win at Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Adcock Field.

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as All-American Meike Lanckohr and Hannah Maxwell found the back in the opening four minutes.Both goals came after perfectly-executed penalty corner opportunities. Lanckohr's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Lee Ann Gordon and Maxwell, while Lanckohr picked up an assist on Maxwell's score. 

App State tied the match with just over five minutes remaining with two fourth-quarter goals to force overtime. 

Almost two minutes into overtime, Hart sealed Wake Forest's sixth non-conference victory of the season after receiving an outlet pass from Abby Carpenter and firing the ball past the Mountaineer goalkeeper. 

Fresh off a career performance on Friday at North Carolina, Ellie Todd tallied four saves on six App State shots on goal in 61 minutes of action.

Wake Forest Highlights

  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 17 in the fifth 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.This marked the 41st-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 44 of the 45 weekly polls.

  • Jennifer Averill secured her 400th win as the head coach of Wake Forest Field Hockey on Friday, Sept. 16 with the Deacs' 4-3 victory against Richmond. 

    • In 31 seasons at the helm of the program, Averill holds an overall record of 403-221-3 and an overall mark of 423-253-6 in 32 years of coaching. 

  • Wake Forest posted a five-match win streak from Sept. 2 through Sept. 18, outscoring opponents 23-5 over that stretch. 

  • Wake Forest's defense continues to impress, holding an opponent to two goals or less for seven times this season. 

  • The Demon Deacons rank second in assists and corners among conference opponents while sitting third in scoring. 

  • Wake Forest has outscored opponents 12-1 in the first quarter this season and has found the back of the net first in all six of its victories. 

  • Grace Delmotte currently sits as the conference leader in assists per game (0.86) and is tied for the most overall assists (6) heading into the weekend. 

    • The junior dished out a career-high tying two assists in back-to-back matches against Lafayette and UC Davis before notching an assist in her third-straight match against Cal on Sunday. 

    • Delmotte played for Field Hockey Canada's 2022 Women's World Cup roster. Delmotte was one of 18-athletes selected to represent Canada in the country's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Canada defeated Team USA for the bronze medal at the 2022 Pan American Cup to qualify for the World Cup. Delmotte was one of four recent graduates of Team Canada's Junior National Program to land on the World Cup roster. 

    • The junior earned her first senior cap in her first World Cup action on opening night against Spain. 

    • On July 7, Delmotte found the back of the net to put Canada 1-0 just five minutes into its match against Argentina. 

  • All-American Meike Lanckor was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Sept. 13. Lanckohr earned the second conference player of the week nod of her career after leading the Deacs in a perfect 2-0 weekend on the Wake Forest's West Coast road trip with a team-high 12 points, netting a team-high five goals and two assists. 

    • The senior is third in the ACC in points per game (2.25) while ranking fourth in goals per game (.88). 

    • Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season in 2021 after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. 

    • Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54). 

  • Ellie Todd registered a career performance in the cage in Wake Forest's ACC opener at North Carolina. The Boston, Mass. native became the first Demon Deacon to tally double-digit saves in a match since 2015, registering a career high 12 stops. Todd made five saves throughout a scoreless opening 30 minutes of play, tying her previous career high set in her collegiate debut against No. 3 Michigan on Aug. 28. 

  • A number of Deacs have been able to net goals through the first five matches as six players have scored multiple goals this season: 

  • Lee Ann Gordon competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. 

  • On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4.

Wake Forest has two more matches at Kentner Stadium the following week as they welcome Louisville, another ACC opponent, on Friday, October 7th at 5 p.m.
