Another weekend to check out ACC volleyball action in DEACTOWN!

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Having reached week five of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, Wake Forest volleyball (14-5, 5-3) is back at home this weekend for two more matches scheduled in Varsity Arena.

The Demon Deacons' second nationally-ranked test of the fall comes in the form of the No. 5 Louisville Cardinals on Friday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. ET. On Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22), Wake Forest will bring in Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. ET start time.

Sunday's match will air on ACC Network. Live stats will be available for both contests.

The program's Reunion Weekend headlines Friday through Sunday.

Wake Forest's 14-5 overall start is its best in a single season throughout team history since 2003.

Wake Forest again had a poised team performance in full effect last Wednesday evening (Oct. 11), bumping its win streak to three matches while sweeping the Virginia Tech Hokies (11-7, 1-6) in a 3-0 finish.

Paige Crawford led her Deacs in kills for an 11th time this year, finishing with 13 on the night, including a .357 hitting percentage.

Veteran middle blockers Olivia Franke and Emmy Ogogor posted eight kills apiece, with the former contributing a team-high-tying four blocks.

Ashley Slater was again efficient in her looks, going 7-of-13 in attacks and only committing one error (.462). Rian Baker handed out 21 assists.

Emma Farrell and Ava Torrance led the way defensively, each collecting 11 digs. Ava Carney had six kills and four blocks.


Friday, Oct. 13 – NC State 3, Wake Forest 1

Stepping into Valvano Arena for its first Big Four test of 2023, Wake Forest volleyball (14-5, 5-3) took on the host NC State Wolfpack (14-4, 4-3) during Friday night (Oct. 13). The Demon Deacons showcased a notable, two-way effort, scooping the first set, but ultimately fell in a 3-1 defeat.

Ava Torrance recorded a new career high in kills by the evening's conclusion, finishing with 14.

For the third time this year, Wake Forest had four individuals register double-figures in kills: Ashley Slater (12), Paige Crawford (11) Emmy Ogogor (10, and Ava Carney (10). Ogogor additionally reached the 800th kill of her career in the midst of the third set.

Crawford notched a new season best in service aces (3) while adding eight digs. Slater was the most efficient Deac, hitting .375 from the floor while tying her season high in kills and leading the team in that category for the first time this fall.

Along with Torrance, Emma Farrell and Kalani Whillock paced the defensive tempo with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

Kylie Adams handed out 24 assists while fellow setter Rian Baker had 16.

Wake outdug the Wolfpack, 56-55.


Still a Spark

Graduate defensive specialist Ava Torrance has notched a few new personal highs in digs this season, coming off a career-best mark of 14 at NC State (Oct. 13). Additionally, the Avon, Indiana, native has recorded 10 or more in her last four showings:

Looking Inside the League

Wake Forest recently moved up to No. 5 in digs as a team among all ACC member schools – holding a 13.81 per-set average.

Additionally, a quartet of Wake Forest players remain top-10 conference players within different statistical columns.

  • Per the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), released on Monday (Oct. 16), Wake Forest currently rests at No. 27.
  • The Deacs' 5-3 mark within conference play is their best start since 2008.
  • Freshman Ava Carney has reached 10 or more kills in 12 separate showings in 2023 – five of which have included 15+.

Scouting the Opposition

Ranking first in the conference team standings as a top-five team in the country, Louisville has dropped one ACC contest thus far (7-1) and is on a four-match winning streak. As a team, the Cardinals are second in the league in points (17.76/set) and service aces (1.74/set). Louisville's players have combined for a .285 hitting percentage – third-best in the ACC. Individual standouts include:
  • Junior defensive specialist Elena Scott – first in the ACC in digs (4.42/set)
  • Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Cara Cresse – second in the ACC in hitting percentage (.461)
  • Redshirt sophomore setter Elle Glock – second in the ACC in assists (9.97/set)
  • Graduate setter Brigitta Petrenko – second in the ACC in service aces (0.54/set)
  • Senior outside hitter Anna DeBeer – fourth in the ACC in kills (3.61/set) and eighth in points (3.89/set)

Notre Dame stands at 10-6 overall with an even 4-4 clip in conference play. The Fighting Irish are set to visit Virginia Tech on Friday for a 6 p.m. ET first serve. A few players within the roster hold top-10 individual rankings across the league:
  • Sydney Palazzolo – first in the ACC in kills (3.97/set), first in points (4.67/set) and third in service aces (0.50/set)
  • Hattie Monson – fifth in the ACC in digs (3.94/set)
