Wake Drops Overtime Battle to No. 12 Boston College on Senior Night

10/20/2023 8:56:00 PM | Field Hockey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Wake Forest field hockey team took No. 12 Boston College to the limit, before falling 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at Kentner Stadium.

The program honored seven student-athletes playing in their final match at Kentner with Jodie Brine, Grace Delmotte, Natalie Friedman, Immie Gillgrass, Lee Ann Gordan, Anna Gwiazdzinski and Meredith Medvetz all donning the Old Gold & Black for the final time at home.

The match marked the second time this season that the Demon Deacons (6-8, 0-5 ACC) have forced extra time, falling in both contests.

Offensively, the Deacs finished with seven shots on the night. Freshman Faye Janse opened the scoring for Wake Forest in the second quarter with her third goal of the year. Junior Brooke McCusker found the back of the cage for the second-straight match and the fourth time in the last six matches to lead the Wake Forest offensive attack.

Graduate transfer Jodie Brine made her first start as a Demon Deacon in between the sticks, and turned away two shots in 30 minutes of action. Ellie Todd entered for Brine in the second half, making saves on a pair of attempts by Boston College (11-5, 2-3 ACC).

How It Happened
  • Making her first start as a Demon Deacon, Jodie Brine made a pair of saves in the opening 15 minutes of play to keep things scoreless after one quarter of action.
  • Wake's backline stood tall to turn away Boston College's one corner attack in the first quarter.
  • Ana Franco ripped the Deacs first shot just 30 seconds into the second quarter forcing the Eagles keeper into a save.
  • Grace Delmotte inserted on the Demon Deacon's first corner with Mia Schoenbeck taking a pair of shots on frame to force the Boston College keeper into action.
  • Boston College grabbed the lead with just 1:05 left before the half on Kara Heck's sixth goal of the season.
  • The Deacs tied things almost immediately out of the break as Anna Gwiazdzinski found a streaking Faye Janse in the shooting circle to even things at 1-1 just 37 seconds into the half.
    • The goal by Janse was the third of her freshman campaign while the assist from Gwiazdzinski was her first as a Demon Deacon.
  • Boston College regained the lead on a ball knocked around in front of the cage and tipped in by Madelieve Drion to make it 2-1 B.C.
  • With less than 11 minutes remaining in the contest, Nat Friedman found Brooke McCusker to tie the match at 2-2.
    • The goal marked the fourth of the season for McCusker and back-to-back matches with a goal for the Vancouver native.
    • Friedman's assist was her second of the season and 17th of her Demon Deacon career.
  • Regulation ended with Wake and B.C. knotted at 2-2.
    • The match was the second overtime contest of the year for Wake Forest and fifth of the season for Boston College.
  • With 2:05 left in the first OT period, Margo Carlin found the back of the net for Boston College to take the match.

Quotables
"It was a tremendous game between two teams fighting hard for a win. I'm extremely proud of the way we performed this evening. We created a lot of opportunities for ourselves, fought back from every change of momentum and showed courage and resilience. Despite the loss, it's a match that we can build on going into the final two contests of the season and into the ACC tournament." - head coach Jen Averill
