Demon Deacons Primed for 2023 ACC Championships

The men are looking to defend their title from a season ago.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After a solid start to the 2023 campaign, the Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams will travel to compete at the ACC Championships Friday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.
 
The Men's 8K Championship will begin at approximately 8:40 a.m. ET, followed by the Women's 6K Championship at 9:30 a.m. ACC Network will have live coverage of both races, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
 
Friday, the top 21 men's and women's finishers will earn All-ACC recognition. The first true freshman to cross the finish line in the men's and women's races will be recognized as ACC Freshman of the Year.
 
ACC Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be determined by a vote of the league's head coaches next month following the completion of the NCAA Championships.

Men's Preview
The Demon Deacons are looking to defend their title from a season ago, as they enter Friday's meet ranked 20th nationally. The Deacs are led by returning All-American Luke Tewalt and standout freshman Rocky Hansen. Of note, Tewalt finished fourth individually at the ACC Championships last season.
 
Stacked Field
The ACC continues to lead all conferences with five teams ranked nationally in the men's poll. Syracuse ranks No. 4, followed by North Carolina at No. 11, Notre Dame at No. 14, Virginia at No. 16 and Wake Forest at No. 20. Florida State is receiving votes.

League Recognition
Nine days ago, freshman Rocky Hansen became the first true freshman to garner Performer of the Week accolades since Oct. 24, 2018. Additionally, Hansen's recognition made Wake Forest the first program to have back-to-back ACC Performer's of the Week since Florida State in 2021 after Paul Specht achieved the honor the previous week.

Women's Preview
Wake Forest received votes in the latest USTFCCCA Coaches Poll for the third time this season. The Demon Deacons recently competed at the XC23 College & Open Pre-Nationals
 – where they coasted to a sixth-place team finish.
 
Wilson's Hot Start
This season, the Deacs have been led by freshman Brooke Wilson as the Castle Rock, Colo., native recorded a pair of top-10 finishes to open her collegiate career, before finishing 20th in a stacked field at the XC23 College & Open Pre-Nationals.
 
Big Stage
The five ACC teams ranked in the women's poll are tied for the second-most of any conference. NC State is currently ranked No. 2 nationally and is followed by Notre Dame at No. 8, Virginia at No. 10, Syracuse at No. 28 and Duke at No. 30. Wake Forest and North Carolina are receiving votes.
