Demon Deacons Fall to William & Mary in Home Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to the Tribe of William & Mary, 2-1, Friday evening inside Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest (1-2, 0-0 ACC) outshot William & Mary (1-1, 0-0 CAA) by a margin of 12-5 (5-3 on goal) and 6-2 in the second half. Neither side tallied a shot on goal in the second half.
The Tribe opened the scoring a little under five minutes into the contest, before freshman midfielder Ava Moore scored the lone goal for the Deacs with 2:03 remaining in the first period. This marks the second-consecutive game the New Jersey native found herself on the scoresheet (Michigan). She also led the Deacs with four shots (three on goal).
William & Mary took the lead for good with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. The Demon Deacons continued to battle, as the team dominated possession and fired five shots in the third quarter.
Nat Friedman, Brooke McCusker, Mia Schoenbeck and Amelia Frey all tallied two shots. Schoenbeck and Frey both took shots on frame. With the Deacs' dominant offensive possessions, sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Todd recorded just one save on three shots on goal from the Tribe. The Wake Forest offense forced at least one save on the Tribe keeper in three of the four quarters.
