The Deacs return to action against Louisville on Sunday. First touch against the Cardinal is set for 1 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey battled No. 11 Duke for 60 minutes, before ultimately falling 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

Junior Rachel Thetford and freshman Lauren Storey both put a shot on cage for the Deacs (4-7, 0-3 ACC) as Duke (8-4, 4-1 ACC) finished with 15 shots to Wake Forest's four. Thetford's effort in the third quarter nearly cut the lead in half.

In nine games played this season, Storey has registered a team-high 10 points while also leading the team with four goals. Her shot on goal Friday also now ties her for the team lead with 11 along with sophomore Faye Janse.

The Blue Devils concluded the match with an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.

In goal, junior Ellie Todd added three saves and now has 44 over the Deacs 11 contests. Todd has started in net for every game this season and now holds a record of 4-7 between the pipes this season.

Through 11 games, Todd has the lowest goals against average of her career, posting a 1.15 GAA this season while also having a career-best .772 save percentage. She now has 169 saves in 47 career games.

How It Happened
  • Duke took the lead in the 10th minute of play with a shot from the top of the circle.
  • Sophomore Ana Franco fired off the first Wake Forest shot of the contest under a minute later, but it went just wide.
  • The Deacs defended a Blue Devil penalty corner well with seconds remaining in the first quarter to keep it a one-score game.
  • Wake Forest came close to an equalizer two minutes into the second quarter, as sophomore Ava Moore's attempt following a corner sailed just over the bar.
  • Duke doubled its advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • The Deacs went into the locker room down, 2-0.
  • Forward Rachel Thetford was inches away from getting a goal back for the Deacs with a few minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • Goalkeeper Ellie Todd came up with back-to-back saves in the fourth quarter and kept the Deacs in it.
  • The Blue Devils closed out the rest of the contest and won, 2-0.
Quotables
"I know the girls are extremely disappointed. We are better than what we showed today and unfortunately just made poor decisions under pressure. We have to figure out a way to create more space, simplify the game and play the way we are capable of playing." - head coach Jen Averill
