Sophomore Faye Janse’s goal in the second overtime period gave the Demon Deacons their first ACC win of the 2024 season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Battling for nearly 80 minutes, sophomore Faye Janse found the back of the cage midway through the second overtime period to give the Wake Forest (5-7, 1-3 ACC) field hockey team a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Louisville (5-9, 1-5 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
Janse found herself in space along the right side of the circle and fired a laser into the top right corner of the cage for her fourth goal of the 2024 season. The sophomore also added an assist on the Deacs second goal, making a great individual run before feeding fellow second-year Ana Franco to tie the match at 2-2 going into halftime.
Wake Forest got on the scoreboard first in the 11th minute off a penalty corner goal by freshman Lena Keller on assists from Mia Montag and Lauren Storey. Overall for the match, the Deacs outshot the Cardinal 10-6.
In goal, junior Ellie Todd added four saves and now has 48 over the Deacs 12 contests. Todd has started in net for every game this season and now holds a record of 5-7 between the pipes this season.
Through 12 games, Todd has the lowest goals against average of her career, posting a 1.20 GAA this season while also having a career-best .762 save percentage. She now has 173 saves in 48 career games.
How It Happened
"The first and second quarter was just awesome to see our press. It was really functional. The theme for us was to be more united both offensively and defensively. In the first half, we certainly did that very well. The third quarter got away from us a little bit and we rebounded in the fourth quarter. I just want to give credit to the players. As a coach, you can only say so much. At the end of the day, they really owned the resiliency. I thought Faye really stood out for us today. She was epic. It wasn't just the goal but she was on fire as a leader of our team and that really showed this afternoon." - head coach Jen Averill
