The Matchup
  • Wake Forest and Syracuse will meet for the second time this season in Wednesday evening's ACC Tournament first round matchup.
  • In their previous meeting on Sept. 27 at SU Soccer Stadium, the Demon Deacons overcame a 66th-minute deficit by scoring twice in a two-minute span between the 78th and 80th minutes to score a 2-1 victory.
  • The result marked the first of four ACC regular season victories for the Demon Deacons, as they also defeated Boston College, Virginia Tech and No. 12 NC State.
  • Syracuse, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-0 upset victory over No. 1 Pitt on Friday evening, as the Orange picked up their second ACC win of the season.
  • This will mark the first-ever postseason meeting between the Demon Deacons and Orange.
Last Time Out
  • The Demon Deacons picked up a massive 1-0 victory over No. 12 NC State in the regular season finale, securing the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament and a first round match at Spry.
  • Despite quality chances created from both sides, it would be Wake Forest who scored the match's only goal in the 75th as junior Basit Umar found the back of the net for his third score of the season.
  • Defensively, Wake Forest registered its sixth clean sheet of the season as a strong effort from the first-time center back pairing of sophomore Travis Smith Jr. and freshman Daniel Krueger along with outside backs freshman Amoni Thomas and senior Bo Cummins stonewalled a strong Wolfpack attack.
  • In goal, senior Trace Alphin saved all five of NC State's attempts on goal.
  • With the result, Wake Forest is now a combined 19-4-4 against NC State, Duke and North Carolina under 10th-year head coach Bobby Muuss with 10 of those victories coming against a ranked opponent.
  • Additionally, it marked the second-straight season and sixth time in 10 years the Demon Deacons finished undefeated in ACC regular season matches at Spry.
The Spry Advantage
  • Since head coach Bobby Muuss' arrival in 2015 along with the coaching staff of associate head coaches Dane Brenner and Steve Armas along with assistant coach Ade Taiwo, Wake Forest ranks No. 1 nationally in home wins (108), 16 more than any other program nationally during that span.
  • Over the last 10 seasons, the Deacs have won at least eight of their matches at Spry Stadium including a double-digit win total seven of those seasons.
  • Wake Forest's home winning percentage of 82 percent since 2015 also ranks third nationally, behind only Denver (84) and Indiana (83.7).
ACC Tournament History
  • Wake Forest will be competing in its 66th ACC Tournament match all-time on Wednesday evening, as the Demon Deacons are 23-29-13 in the tournament dating back to 1987.
  • This will be just the third ACC Tournament first round match for the Demon Deacons, as they previously have scored a 4-0 victory over Boston College on Nov. 8, 2005 and a 3-0 win against Virginia on Nov. 3, 2021.
  • Wake Forest is also 10-9-2 in ACC Tournament matches played in Winston-Salem.
  • In the 10 seasons under head coach Bobby Muuss, the Demon Deacons are 9-7-2 in ACC Tournament matches with titles in 2016 and 2017.
  • The Demon Deacons remain the most recent ACC program to win back-to-back ACC Tournament championships.
Scouting the Orange
  • A balanced scoring attack has led the way for the Orange this season, as 14 different Syracuse players have scored with seven tallying multiple goals on the campaign.
  • Gabe Threadgold, Chimere Omez and Daniel Burko pace the Orange in scoring with three goals apiece.
  • In goal, Tomas Hut has started all 16 matches this season recording 46 saves and three clean sheets.
  • Away from SU Soccer Stadium, Syracuse picked up three road wins in the regular season: (1-0 vs. Colgate on Aug. 22, 3-1 vs. Albany on Oct. 1 and 2-1 vs. Providence on Oct. 8).
Looking Ahead
  • If the Demon Deacons are able to advance against the Orange, Wake Forest will face either No. 4 SMU or No. 13 Boston College on Sunday in a match that will take place at either 2, 4 or 6 p.m. and air nationally on the ACC Network.
  • If Wake Forest and Boston College both advance, the match would be played at Spry.
