Timely Hitting Propels No. 1 Wake Forest to Opening Weekend Sweep

2/18/2024 7:02:00 PM | Baseball

The Demon Deacons used six two-out RBIs to complete the Opening Weekend sweep in a 14-3 victory over Akron.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind timely hitting and an offensive attack that posted runs in all but one inning, No. 1 Wake Forest cruised to a 14-3 run-rule victory over Akron on Sunday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Setting a regular season attendance record of 3,514 on Friday, Deacon Nation continued to show up over the course of Opening Weekend en route to a regular season weekend attendance record of 8,270.

After blasting the first pitch of his Wake Forest career over the left center wall on Friday, Adam Tellier continued to stay on the attack, sending the first pitch of the game deep to center for a standup double to set the tone for the Wake offense.

Tellier came home on a Seaver King flyout to center field to knot the game at 1-1 after an inning of play.

The Deacs grabbed the lead for good in the second on Austin Hawke's fifth RBI of the weekend with the sophomore transfer slicing a ball into the right field gap to plate a run.

Wake Forest notched their second big inning of the season in the third with four runs coming across the plate thanks in part to a Jack Winnay double, Hawke single and Tellier's second double of the day.

Striking out the side in his inning of work on the mound on Saturday, two-way player Cam Nelson manufactured an RBI with a fielder's choice in his first at-bat as a Deac in the fourth. The Baltimore product collected his first career hit in the fifth with a single through the left side.

The Demon Deacons sealed the game with a six spot in the fifth, including King's first homer in a Wake Forest uniform, as the sophomore unloaded on a 1-0 pitch to left center.

On the mound, starter Michael Massey tossed 3.0 innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits with four strikeouts.

Sophomore Ben Shenosky picked up the first win of his Demon Deacon career with an effective 1.2 IP to go along with a pair of punchouts. The sophomore entered with the bases loaded in the fifth, inducing a double-play ball on his third pitch of the ballgame to escape the jam.

Coming on for Shenosky in the final inning, freshman Andrew Koshy was the fourth first-year roster player to make their Wake debut on the bump this weekend, tossing an effective final inning with a pair of flyouts and a groundout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Akron got on the board in the top half of the first with a leadoff walk coming around for the first run of the contest.
  • Tellier ambushed the first pitch for a double off the center field wall to put the Deacs in business in the bottom half of the first.
  • After moving to third on a flyout, Tellier came home on a sacrifice fly from King to tie the game at 1-1 after an inning of play.
    • The RBI marked the first for King in a Wake Forest uniform.
  • Allowing an unearned run in the first, Massey settled in with three punchouts in the second including a nasty breaking ball to end the inning.
  • The Deacs took the lead in the second on Hawke's fifth RBI of the weekend with the sophomore blasting a ball to the right center gap to score Winnay.
  • King's first hit of the year put the wheels in motion for the second big inning of the season for the Demon Deacons.
  • Winnay laced a ball down the right field line for a double that got to the wall in a hurry plating King.
  • Hawke drove in his second run of the day with a single through the left side to extend the lead.
  • Tellier capped the inning with his second double of the day going to almost the identical spot as his leadoff double to push the Wake lead to 6-1 after three complete innings of play.
  • Wake manufactured two more in the bottom half of the fourth with RBIs from Nelson and Winnay.
  • The Demon Deacons sealed the game with a six spot in the fifth, including King's first homer in a Wake Forest uniform, as the sophomore unloaded on a 1-0 pitch to left center.
  • Cameron Gill just missed his first homer in a Wake uniform, sending a triple off the top of the left center wall to plate the final run of the day for the Deacs.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • With record-setting attendance during the 2023 season, Deacon Nation set the tone over the course of Opening Weekend in 2024, setting a new regular-season weekend series record with 8,270 Wake Forest fans coming out to support the Deacs over the weekend. Breaking the previous record of 8,096 in last year's series against Virginia Tech.

STAGGERING STATISTICS
  • Wake Forest broke out offensively on Saturday with eight of the nine in the starting lineup collecting a hit.
    • Seaver King and Austin Hawke both collected their first multi-hit games in the Old Gold & Black.
    • Nick Kurtz had his first multi-hit effort of the 2024 season to bring his career total to 42.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Good to get a win there. Michael Massey is not back to full strength yet. He didn't have his best stuff today but he battled and found a way to get us nine outs. He walked a few more people than he has been recently. His offspeed pitches weren't really working for him. He was a little out of sorts, too. But again, he's a competitor and he found a way to get us nine outs. I was really happy with Ben Shenosky. He came in and got us a big ground ball double-play there when the game was still tight. I was also happy with Andrew Koshy and the way he threw the ball today in his first collegiate appearance.

I'm glad we ended this in seven innings so we can have a rested and ready bullpen for UNCG on Tuesday, that was important as well. Offensively, we were better today but I still think there's room for improvement there. We were really good with two outs today. Austin Hawke capitalized twice with two-out RBIs. Tellier had a pair of two-out RBIs. Cameron Gill and Jack Winnay also had two-out RBIs. Up and down the lineup, I'm pleased with how we swung the bat. It was good to see Seaver King get going because obviously we need him to be the team we want to be." - head coach Tom Walter
