Coach's Comments
"Our team had a great response from what happened on Tuesday in a loss to Oklahoma. It was our first regular-season, non-conference loss at home since I've been the head coach here. So, we had a bitter taste in our mouth. I told them it isn't about what happened, but how we would respond. Our response was at a high level tonight. Hats off to a great crowd here tonight – I know how passionate West Virginia fans are. The DNA of their program is toughness, physicality and grittiness, and [West Virginia head coach] Ross Hodge has all of that and more. There's a lot of great days ahead for Mountaineer basketball.
"I thought in the first half that our first-shot defense was good, but they got 14 offensive rebounds, we fouled too much, turned it over and they got it back. That helped them get back into the game. In the second half, we did a much better job of getting them off the glass to not allow extra shots. We did a really good job in our offense against a team that pressures you. Every time we got to the third side, we were 1.73 points per possession – that's pretty high against a team that can guard. Our guards got 18 rebounds total because I was on them at halftime about not rebounding. It's hard for bigs to get every rebound - our guards had to come down too, and I thought we did a better job of that.
"We showed great patience late in the shot clock and late in the game. Nate Calmese did a great job of running our offense. Whenever you win a big game on the road, you need to have a great performance by somebody at least – Juke has been our best player all year long. I think he is one of the most improved players in all of college basketball from his freshman to sophomore year. He's showing it and made big-time shots tonight, both threes and through physicality. I thought Juke and Tre'Von [Spillers] did a great job for us down the stretch." - head coach Steve Forbes
