Deacs Primed for General James Hackler Championship

The Demon Deacons return to South Carolina for their third tournament of the spring season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Wake Forest men's golf team will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the General James Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club, with the first round of tournament play starting Sunday. The Deacs will be in the second group off the first tee, paired with players from No. 19 Duke and No. 1 Auburn starting at 9:00 a.m.

In their last outing at the Colleton River Collegiate, the Deacs claimed their fifth top-five finish this season. Senior Scotty Kennon led the Deacs on the individual leaderboard, firing a bogey free six-under 66 in round two to end the tournament tied for third place.

Alongside No. 40 ranked Wake Forest, ACC foes Duke (No. 19) and Louisville (No. 39) and last year's national championship winner Auburn (No. 1) are the only other ranked teams in the 16-team field. 

Both claiming their third career victories at the General James Hackler Championship, Cameron Young (-12, 2019) and Will Zalatoris (-9, 2017) are two former Deacs who have claimed the individual title at this tournament. Among the household names in golf who have played in the Hackler, Bill Haas finished six-over and finished tied for 17th place in 2004. 

Kennon and Marshall Meisel are both ranked within the top 50 of the PGA University rankings. Kennon is ranked at No. 26, while Meisel is ranked at No. 41.

Scoring average of 71.17…Currently ranked 26th in the PGA Tour University rankings… Kennon picked up his fifth top-5 finish of his senior season, ending the final round of the Colleton River Collegiate tied for third place just three strokes off the lead…Kennon claimed his second collegiate title at the 54th Furman Invitational with a score of 202 (-11), the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the tournament…

Marshall Meisel
Scoring average of  71.33…Currently ranked 41st in the PGA Tour University rankings… In his last outing, Meisel shot three under-par rounds of 71-69-70 to finish the tournament tied for fourth at 6-under par, just one stroke short of the individual lead at the Battle at Briars Creek. This was the Chevy Chase, Md. native's second top-five finish of his senior season, and second of his career…Led the Deacs in the final round of the Colleton River Collegiate carding a two-under 70 tying for 17th place…

Tom Haberer 
Scoring average of 72.19…Claimed third top-20 finish of his sophomore career at the Colleton River Collegiate carding his best round in the final round at even par. Haberer led in the 80 player field in scoring on par fours over three rounds…

Jakob Melin
Scoring average of  72.62… In his outing at the Lyon's Links Invitational, junior Jakob Melin captured his first top-10 finish as a Demon Deacon, holding a share of fourth place…Carded a three-over 75 in his final round, tying for 47th at the Colleton River Collegiate…

Tournament Format
54-hole stroke play with 18-holes being played each day. The tournament is three days, teeing off on Sunday March 16th and concluding Tuesday March 18th. Teams will play 18 holes on Sunday, March 16, with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. The Deacs will be in the second group off the first tee with players from No. 19 Duke and No. 1 Auburn.
