WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's basketball team and head coach Megan Gebbia announced the addition of rising junior guard/forward Mary Carter Thursday, who is transferring from Cal Poly.
This brings the total number of incoming players for the upcoming season to seven as the Demon Deacons also announced the signing of four freshman additions during the early signing period in November and Wake Forest announced the addition of forward Savannah Metcalfe on Wednesday.
Additionally, Carter is the third transfer the Deacs have signed in the cycle along with transfer guard Raven Preston from Elon and transfer forward Grace Oliver from Colorado.
Carter, who has two years of eligibility remaining, adds a veteran presence to the swing player along with rising junior guard/forward Madisyn Jordan and Preston. Additionally the Deacs are also bringing in multiple swing players in the 2025 signing class.
During her sophomore season at Cal Poly, Carter averaged 12.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, starting in 31 of her 32 games that she played during the 2024-25 season. Over the course of the year, Carter knocked down 42.4 percent of her shots while also shooting better than 80 percent from the free throw line.
She finished in double figures scoring 23 times during her sophomore campaign including a career-best 27 points on 11-of-20 FG including going 5-of-12 from behind the arc against Long Beach State. Carter also recorded four double-double performances which included an impressive 23-point, 11-rebound performance in a victory at Cal State-Bakersfield.
Carter was named as an All-Big West selection this season and was placed on the Big West All-Freshman team a season ago when she averaged 7.0 points per game to go along with 3.9 rebounds per game.

Mary Carter | G/F | 6-3 | Rocklin, CA/Antelope/Cal Poly
"I chose Wake Forest because of the superior combination of athletics and academics that the school has to offer. The facilities, academic rigor and support are top tier at Wake Forest and help to create a winning culture. The coaching staff's vision for the team aligns with my basketball goals. I am excited for a new challenge and to start winning with Wake Forest in the ACC!" - Mary Carter
From Coach Gebbia
"Mary's height and length as a swing player is a huge asset for us. She is a great shooter for her size and that can really stretch the defense. Mary is a capable rebounder and her length also helps her on the defensive end of the floor. She is an ascending player that we think her best collegiate basketball is still ahead of her. You saw significant steps in how she played from her freshman to sophomore seasons and we think that will continue as a junior this upcoming year. Culturally, she will fit in well with what we are building here at Wake Forest and that was very evident from the moment she stepped on campus for her visit. Her personality meshed well with the current team and her winning mentality is what we need. Her skillset overall pairs well with all the other players around her on the team and we are excited to see that all come together this summer when the entire team comes to campus." - Megan Gebbia
